ok charter, is about to get burned to death
Ok when I'm just cruising down the interweb i get the either "connecting to" or "waiting for" with firefox wich I know that my internet is dead but pidgin and xfire still run, then after a while they go dead to. I have to reset my modem and router then eventually restart. It wasn't frequent but now it is after i play a game, torrent a linux distro, poof its gone and I'm really starting to get frustrated any ideas?

Re: ok charter, is about to get burned to death
Well, I'd start by upgrading the firmware on the router, that will sometimes fix such issues. Also, did you try connecting directly to the modem and see if you still have the issue? This will narrow down the possibilities.

Re: ok charter, is about to get burned to death
Well, if it happens when you're directly connected to the modem, I'd be calling your ISP's tech support.

Re: ok charter, is about to get burned to death
in your modems internal pages what are the signals you see and are they fluctuating more than 3db continuously? You may need to refresh the page.
Also when your connection drops can you still get into the cable modem internals? if so can you ping your public gateway? |

Re: ok charter, is about to get burned to death
You said you use an Ambit. Is it the blue one that stands up or the little grayish/black box? Either way 192.168.100.1 should bring you to the modem internal page login screen. That will either be root/root or user/user to login.
I am not sure if you will be able to reach that through your router or not but give it a shot. |

Re: ok charter, is about to get burned to death
there is probably your main culprit.
that upstream power level should NEVER be above 55db I am surprised you are even online but then again those Ambits are the ONLY ones I have seen that can handle such a wide range of signals and still function. These are Charter specs: Upstream (Tx) should be between 35 to 53 Downstream (Rx) should be between 12 to -12 SNR should be > 31 Now i don't know what is causing those to be bad but I would suggest this. Call tech support and advise them of the signal issue. At the same time, sign up for wire maintenance (this is cheap) that way if it turns out to be the wiring in your house you will be covered and wont be charged a truck roll. Next month you can drop the wire maintenance if you like. |

redsunx
I am no computer expert but I know cable. You need to get charter to come out they have rev. problem. You need to raise the Downstream Receive Power Level: -9.7 dBmV. Up above 0. |

Re: ok charter, is about to get burned to death
oneeyejack, do not be offended but you are wrong. Please do not confuse others by posting inaccurate information. If you doubt me, feel free to google for cable modem signal levels.
redsunx keep those signal ranges I posted in mind. Those are valid. |
