Problem after Installing Verizon DSL/MSN 9

Hi everyone,

I am helping my daughter with their old Campaq Presario 5008 running Window ME. The problem started right after installing the Verizon DSL. The Internet connection work once using DSL but went down after updating to MSN 9 Verizon. They have MSN dial-up before and thing seems to work but very slow.

They are using a Westell 6100 and connected through one of the USB port (no NIC card). The power light is on, so with DSL, USB and Internet. After working with the Verizon tech support we were told that we have a computer problem.

I connected my own laptop (Dell Inspiron 1100 / Window XP) to the Ethernet connection at the modem and after rebooting the DSL modem I got my EI to work with my laptop. It is a Compaq PC problem indeed!!!!

I tried to re-connect the Compaq to MSN dial-up, can get a connection but EI still won't open a page.

To make a long story short, they have lost the original CD for the Compaq Presario. The window restore does not give me a date before today. I was not able to do a restore plus unable to do a disk scan.

I need guidance to bringing back this old PC to work, while they are shopping for a new computer. I am hoping that my grandson can still use this old computer once I get it going somehow.

Hoping to hear from someone soon.

Eric

Personally, I'd install a NIC, since you need no drivers for the NIC, and it should be PnP.

Re: Problem after Installing Verizon DSL/MSN 9

I think that is the right route, I did tried to get the dial-up to work and would not work. I get a connection but can't get the MSN to sign up. Norton Live update does not even work. Thanks for the suggestion.
