Dialup does not connect above 28.8k

I have a built in PCI SoftV92 56k Modem on my emachines and lately it hasnt been connecting above 28.8KPBS. I've tried different access numbers, put in Init scripts Earthlink support have told me to put in. I've tried updating drivers but Im not sure if there the latest ones. Any solutions to this problem?

Re: Dialup does not connect above 28.8k

Frankly, it most likely is not your problem, but is the phone company who is the root of this problem.

A phone company does not have to promise anything over something like 14.4 access or so. What they do is run lines and when there becomes more housing needing service, the use a splitter type interface that distributes the access between more customers, thereby reducing each one's capable speed on that line. This happens quite often when new housing comes near where you live as the line is split down further.

I used to have this problem, but finally convinced one repair person to hook me directly up to the main line, so I now get most of the time 49.6 to 52.2 or so. The guy that did mine (he wasn't supposed to do this, but did it as a favor) it lived in the country also and even though a phone tech, was only getting 14.4 to his personal computer. Therefore, most likely, you have a problem you can't solve, expecially if you live a long ways from the main station.

Just providing you this information so you know what it might be.
