[SOLVED] Modem problem "Limited or no connectivity"

Hello, hopefully someone here can help me. Anyway, I'm trying to set up a wireless Linksys router. The router's set-up asks me to connect directly to my modem so that it can automatically set everything up for me.

However, when I connect my laptop directly to my dsl modem (Verizon), my connection always comes up as limited/no connectivity. I've tried everything on this page but nothing has worked. The strange part is, when I hook my modem to the Belkin router and have that connect to my laptop, my connection is fine.

Whenever I try to repair my connection when I am directly connected to my modem, the repair always stops at Renewing IP address, and tells me that the network was unable to assign a network address to my computer.


Is there any reason why my DSL connection would not work when I connect it directly to my laptop, but works when I connect to the internet through my Belkins router? I have no active firewalls except for the XP firewall.

Look in Device manager, network adapters and see if your onboard network adapter is working or disabled

Yup, my network adaptors (wireless and ethernet) are both working.

OK, lets start from scratch. You say you are hooking up a linsys wireless router (what type) to you modem (What type of modem?). It tells you to first connect your PC directly(meaning hardwired) to your modem (this is when you say you do not get on the internet). When you hook it up to your BELKIN router you get the internet? Is this connection wireless or direct? Also you are mentioning 2 routers? Please give me the model numers of what you are using.

Correct, so when I hardwire my laptop to the modem (my desktop experiences the same problem), I do not get any connection at all. However, when I connect my modem to my Belkin router (model #F5D5231-4) and then directly connect the router to my laptop, both my laptop and desktop get a connection back.

I'm mentioning two routers, but I only mentioned the Linksys router (BEFW11S4) because attempting to set it up is what got me to try and directly connect to the modem in the first place. My modem is a SpeedStream 5360 for ADSL.

So the main problem here is that when I hardwire the laptop or desktop to the modem, I have limited or no connectivity. Because of that, the Linksys set-up program is unable to automatically configure itself.

Do you have the User manual for this router? I dont see where it says to hookup your PC first to the Modem. I do not know what version you are using, so you will have to pick one. Here is the link:

Also be sure your network adapters are set to optain IP address automatically on your PC's

Ah thanks for the link Bill. I just followed the manual directions rather than have the set-up CD do everything for me. I forgot that I had to log-in via PPPoE, that's why my modem was refusing to connect me.

Now I have wireless inside the house and the hardwired connections work also. Thanks again Bill!
