[SOLVED] router/modem problems
I recently got a WNR854T netgear router to replace my old BEFW11S4 V.2 linksys router. I have verizon DSL. When hooking up the new router, it detected my IP as being static, which it is not. At the time I just ignored this and went ahead and inputted my verizon user name and password into the PPPoE settings. However, the new router would not connect to the internet; didn't even get assigned an IP address. After doing some research, I decided to make sure all the settings on my modem (Westell A90-210015-04) were correct since I'd only looked at its settings once or twice years ago when I set up the network in the first place. When I connected my computer directly to the modem, I discovered that my computer was not being assigned an IP by it either. I am positive it used to because I used to have problems with my router overheating and shutting off, so I would occasionally plug a computer directly into the modem and bypass the router to avoid this (I have since relocated the router to a location with better ventilation). In addition to my computer being forced to assign itself an IP, I cannot connect to the internet through the modem directly, nor can I even access its settings via 192.168.1.1. I am at a loss for what I should do, because the modem still works just fine with the linksys router, so I'm not sure if there's really any problem with it. If anyone has any suggestions they would be welcome.

Re: router/modem problems
FYI, the default base address for Netgear routers is 192.168.0.1, not 192.168.1.1, which is the Linksys default.
Did you turn off the Westell modem to connect the new router? If you can still connect with the old router, please go to the router's web based setup pages and post a screen shot of the WAN connection status, including the assigned IP address.

Re: router/modem problems
![]() This is the old linksys router, and currently its the only way I can connect to the internet. The new router cant seem to connect, and neither can I connect directly through the modem. And yes, I have been able to access the netgear's base address. I had already tried turning off my computer, router, and modem in all possible combinations before connecting and turning things on. |

Re: router/modem problems
Did you use those addresses to configure the WAN of the new router? Is the old router setup to for dynamic connection to the ISP?

Re: router/modem problems
ok, so after a lengthy talk with verizon tech support which consisted entirely of them telling me to turn off and turn on computer, router, and modem in every possible combination, as well as unplugging and replugging everything, they determined that for some reason I am not receiving an IP from them (gasp). So they're going to have their technicians check their end and the lines in and around my house.

Re: router/modem problems
I would reset the modem to factory defaults, plug the modem directly into the computer, and try to start from scratch with the modem's settings. Then, I would hook up the new router, set the modem to bridged mode, and put in the PPPoE settings into the router.

Re: router/modem problems
Its all fixed now, at about 11:30 last night I randomly decided to check my router, and the internet connection light was green, and everything was working. So there was some bug on their end that was preventing me from receiving an IP from verizon. Thanks for all the suggestions though.
