router wireless problem
I have Dlink 625n router. Twice happened where won't connect wireless and when checked ip address, was different from dns/gateway setup in router. default ip is 192.168.0.1 but showed 259.169.......When accessed router GUI, everything seems right.I will try to remember the exact ip number next time..Can anybody explain what is happening? Thank you. When this occurs, can only access router with ethernet cable.

Re: router wireless problem
Actually, 259 is an impossible address. Are you sure it wasn't 169.254.x.x? That's the auto-configuration address that is assigned when Windows can't find the DHCP server.
Please supply the following info. The name of your ISP and country of residence. Make/model of the broadband modem. Make/model of the router (if any). Connection type, wired, wireless. Make/model of network card or wireless adapter. Make/model of your computer (motherboard if home-built). Version and patch level of Windows, i.e. XP-Home SP2.

Re: router wireless problem
Yes, you are correct in the ip of 169.254......I was able to resolve this by going into the router GUI and checking the configuration. What compounded the problem was 1 of the desktop wasn't connecting to the router using wireless pci adapter card. Deleted and reinstalled the software, plugged in the card and windows sees it. This is the strange part, scans for network and cannot find it, I manually enter all info and still can't see network so dns, gateway info not acquired. Thought the card might be bad and since I have same card in other computer, replaced the card and same problem. Booted the card in the other desktop and no problem getting on the web. Question, could the pci slot be bad, or chipset bios for pci slot be corrupted. Thank you for your help.

Re: router wireless problem
It could be almost anything, but I'd be betting against a bad slot or MB BIOS issue. You might try the card in a different PCI slot, sometimes that resolves resource conflicts.

Re: router wireless problem
I would have tried that except this is a dell with small case, no expansion and 1 pci slot only. I have updated the bios, but not the chipset bios. My other solution is to go with a usb wireless adapter to access the web.

Re: router wireless problem
Well, you could return this card and try a different brand...

Re: router wireless problem
You should take your own advice.
Perhaps you forgot the other thread where you got your kinckers in a knot because I had the temerity to suggest something that you sort of suggested.

Re: router wireless problem
Sorry for the late response, I did try a friend's wireless pci which was a linksys, loaded software and windows saw the card but same result. when opened the program, it said the card was disabled and wouldn't allow me to configure to the network. I have ordered a linksys usb wireless adapter and still waiting for delivery. I will let you know if it will work. BTW I also downloaded the chipset driver and burned it into a cdr and reloaded it on the computer without any resolution to the problem.

Re: router wireless problem
If the card is disabled, did you try to simply enable it?

Re: router wireless problem
When you right clicked on it, you didn't have the enable option?

Re: router wireless problem
didn't try that....but today I got the usb adapter. Configured it and all the buttons work. Problem is it scans and find the network, but then won't connect and scans again. This goes on every few seconds. I had similar problem with the cardbus adapter for my laptop and the forum suggested I disable the WZC in services whiched worked for the laptop. I did the the same on the desktop, but it didn't resolve this constant scanning. Any help/suggestions appreciated. thanks.

Re: router wireless problem
If you have encryption enabled, try disabling it for a test. Also, disable any non-standard extensions to the 802.11g protocol on the wireless configuration page of the router.

Re: router wireless problem
apparently, the usb adapter cannot function in wpa /wpa2 mode. After I enabled security protocol, it stopped working again. I had to revert to wep mode for it to work. I will reconfigure the other computer on my network. thanks again for your knowledge and help, Johnwill.

Re: router wireless problem
Glad we could help. Perhaps it's time to buy a better adapter.
