Very high Latency

You might not believe me but my latency hit 22,000 the other day. I got that figure from the online game I play which is World of Warcraft. I never had a problem before but about a month ago my latency started to get bad around 9pm my time (eastern). About 2 weeks ago it started to get bad all the time.

I have a cable modem and my isp is a very small cable company in southeastern Kentucky. They have 1 guy for tech support and from what I can tell he is better at monitoring phone calls (he never answers the phone then he calls back like 2 seconds adter I leave a message) than he is at tech support.

My average latency in game is from 500 to 2,000. I can't play at those levels. When I cast a spell it takes 20 seconds for it to actually do it and by then my character is dead. So I posted on Blizzards forums here:

http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/th...10642981&sid=1

My tracert can be found in that post. I sent the tracert to my isp and you can see their response in that post. From what I understand cable modems are bad for latency but nothing should be this bad. I had a cable modem when I used to live and it was fine. It was fine where I live now until a month or two ago.

Should I forget my isp and get dsl? I don't even know if dsl is offered in my area. Is there something more I can do? Reformat? I really don't think it's on my end. And I don't think I should be the one to contact Sprint. Shouldn't my isp contact them? I'm not Sprints customer, they are. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Warcraft is about all I can afford for recreation and it helps me relax after a long day of work. Thanks for taking the time to read my rant.

Edit: ok lol, here is a screenshot of when my latency hit 22k

Re: Very high Latency

Ok I ran a test on dslreports.com and here are the results

http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2242170

Doesn't that show this problem is with my isp?

Re: Very high Latency

Yep, those results suck! You need to talk to your ISP...

Re: Very high Latency

I already talked to my isp. this is their response:

AFTER THAT 2ND HOP IT LEAVES OUR SYSTEM AND IS ON SPRINTS BACK BONE. ANY LATENCY AFTER THAT HOP IS UP TO THE PROVIDER CONNECTED TO SPRINT. We cant guarantee anything once it leaves our system.

Is it possible this is sprints fault and if it is who should contact them, me or my isp? thanks

Re: Very high Latency

Well, the first and second hop are the ones with the problem, so I suggest you talk to them again!

Re: Very high Latency

I posted at http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,18532585 also and someone there seems to think it could be normal lag???? Is it possible for that to be true when it just started about 2 months ago and was only at night for a while and is all the time now? Also, I don't see how 22,000 latency could be from normal lag? Again, thanks for all the help so far.

Thumbs Down Re: Very high Latency

I think it's about time you changed your ISP :)

A small company that is getting new customers and not expanding quickly enough to supply a steady service is never that much use for an online gamer.
