Cannot connect
I recently got a new motherboard and video card for a PC of mine. When I plug in my ethernet cable, it detects it and tries to acquire a network address but to no avail. It tries for a few minutes and says it can't connect. Any help here would be appreciated.

Re: Cannot connect
Did you reinstall the modem?
With my ISP, i had to type in the password and isp address ( which was my name and isp name .com) in the connection settings using the following method: ...start>control panel>network connections That should show if your isp is there.. |

Re: Cannot connect
it could be a few different things. is the ethernet on the new motherboard, or is it a card? are you using a router, or just plugging the modem straight into the ethernet port? also, what type of internet connection is it (cable, dsl, dial-up)?

Re: Cannot connect
I've tried both on a card and the motherboard. I am plugging directly from the modem, and its cable internet. I really think its something in Windows because I use the same exact setup to plug the internet into the laptop I am using to type out this reply. :P

Re: Cannot connect
Nah, when I signed up with them I didnt tell them what computer I was using. Got my internet and TV at same time and I didnt say anything about what kind of computer I was using. And I did get a CD with the modem but its only for setting up connecting to the internet with USB.

Re: Cannot connect
start>control panel>internet options>connections
Can you see your isp in the box...and is "always dial my default connection" ticked? Click settings in same window....is your password and username there...if mine is blank then i cannot connect to the net.. |

Re: Cannot connect
TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.
For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt. Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log If that doesn't do it, let's see this: Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here.

Re: Cannot connect
Well, the indications are that your computer can't find a DHCP server. If the stack repair doesn't fix it, and you're SURE the cable and the router port is good, next step is to replace the NIC.
