fios help

just got fios installed, and i went on xbox live (through a cat5 ethernet going upstairs) and within the first hour, a message pops up and says "dissconnected from xbox live" and i lose my game... i go in the garage, look at the ONT and the battery, an both have 1 green light each. i sign on to xbox live again and it connects fine. so i lose my connection and then i can sign back on right after..??

Re: fios help

i used to have the cat5 ethernet ran all the way upstairs, but the fios technician actually ct the cat5 in half, put a cat5 end on the "cut half part) e then plugged that into a newly installed wall jack. would this have anything to do with me losing connection or somthing? its really weird i have never had this problem with it disconnecting before

Re: fios help

If you have the pairs wired incorrectly, the connection will be VERY flaky, that's the first thing to check.

Re: fios help

what do you mean the "pairs"? the only question is how the tech guy cut my ethernet in half and installed a wall jack and then put a cat5 end on the end of the "cut in half part". i never had this problem with my dsl. i changed the router settings to "xbox" because it has a setting for it, and it happened again today.

Re: fios help

I'm talking about the twisted pairs in the Ethernet cable. They MUST be wired as follows.

Re: fios help

Well, that's where I'd start, because what you are describing sounds like a mis-wired cable.

Re: fios help

would that make me get worse speed tests also? because i ran speakeasy on this computer (my main one) and got 5100 MB down and 1870 up, and then i ran it on my upstairs computer (wired with that ethenet cable we are talking about) and got 4600 down and 1400 up... should there be that much of a diff anyway?

Re: fios help

There should be no difference in speeds with cable lengths up to 100 meters.

Re: fios help

but since the ethernet is the second ethernet being used to newtwork my computers, couldnt that be a speed decreaser? the more ethernet ports (the more computers being networked) all 4 computers should get the same speed?

Re: fios help

Some variation in the speed can happen, simply because of differences in the computer configuration.

Re: fios help

its weird because i went to the verizon website and went to fIOS. i went to check my Fios speed, and used THEIR speed test for fios. and it started up, and then it said that i have a faulty ethernet cable and cannot complete the test.... but this is on my MAIN computer, not the computer that i use upstairs (which we think the ethernet is wired wrong)...

also, EVERY single time i "finish" that speed test, i get a firefox.exe error saying that it encountered and a problem and needs to close. it has heppend at least 8 times (the amount of times i have tried to test my speed)

Re: fios help

It sounds like you have some corruption of your installation, perhaps starting with spyware/malware scans would be a good idea.
