Router Issue....Advice Please

I have a Linksys WRT54GC compact wireless router. I have a desktop connected via cable and 3 wireless laptops. Every now and then I lose internet connection. To resolve it, I have to plug my desktop directly into the DSL modem and the connection comes back. I then plug the desktop back into the router and the router back to the modem and then everything is fine again. I can't figure out why it does this. I can ping the router successfully and all IP addresses are network addresses. The router just loses the connection for some reason. Any ideas or help????

I'd start by upgrading the router to the latest firmware, and reset it to factory defaults and reconfigure. That will frequently fix issues like this.

Re: Router Issue....Advice Please

Can a router cause slow internet connection? For the past month I wanna say, my internet connection has been really really slow! I have DSL and pages take longer than usual to load and somtimes they time out. I feel like the connection is alot faster when I connect the modem directly to a desktop/laptop.

In the meantime the latest firmware on my router is the latest firmware availble on the linksys site. I reset all the settings to default so we'll see if I lose connection again.

Re: Router Issue....Advice Please

Go to www.dslreports.com and run a speed test with it connected directly to the modem, and again through the router. Post the results here.

Well, the speeds appear identical, so there router isn't slowing you down. Is it still disconnecting? Does it run properly when connected only to the modem?

Re: Router Issue....Advice Please

Well the disconnection happens here and there. I can go days without it disconnecting but then it happens. It runs properly when connected directly to the modem. But I guess I should leave it connected directly for a day to see how it goes.

As far as the lag, yesterday the internet connection was slow at times again. All 3 of my pcs were on (desktop, 2 laptops) and pages were timing out and sometimes took a minute or two to load. Lately this has been happening alot more than the disconnection issue. The lag issue occurs several times a day sometimes more, as I experienced this past weekend. There is a light on my modem labled "activity" that blinks really fast when the connection is flawless, and really really slow when I find the connection is lagging. Since the connection his the modem first, it has to be a DSL issue right?? This is also how I can tell the connection is lost, the "activity" light on the modem no longer lights up but then I connect it directly to a pc and it lights up again and after a minute I reconnect it back to router/modem and everything is good. This is confusing me.

Re: Router Issue....Advice Please

I think you have ISP issues, not router issues. When you get slow, try running the line quality tests at www.dslreports.com and see what they turn up.

Okay...next time I experience the lag issue, I'll run the speedtest and post them here. Thanks.

You might run one while it's working well as a reference.
