At wits end for a Limited or No Connectivity problem
My connection is through SHAW cable, directly connected to the computer (no router, although, previously there was a router connected). There's a Lock symbol displayed over the Received Packets side. Which means, i'm sending packets but I'm not receiving any. Trying to repair the connection gives an unable to complete this function, "Renewing your IP Address." I've been followed a few different threads on this board, so I've applied/tried multiple different fixes, including:
1. % ipconfig /flushdns 2. % ipconfig /release 3. % ipconfig /renew 1. Remove NIC drivers 2. Reboot 3. Let them reinstall 4. Even installed updated drivers 1. reset WINSOCK % netsh winsock reset catalog 2. reset TCP/IP Stack % netsh int ip reset C:\resetlog.txt 3. run Winsock XP Fix 1. Applied the Microsoft patch to fix Limited or no connectivity bug on SP2 1. Manually set the IP All of which have had no real effect. I'm still getting a "Limited or no Connection." error. However, I am able to connect to a laptop directly. Which is how I'm writing this right now. So, I'm sure the CAT5 cable is fine. Also, I should note that there are no errors being displayed in the Device Manager. I'm running Windows XP SP2 on a Dell Dimension 4400 (quite old, and it's used). It was previously connected through a U.S. Robotics Router, but I doubt that has any effect on this issue. Any help getting me connection would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise, I'm going to have to go for a complete wipe and reformat the entire drive. Which I don't really want to do, since I'm trying to do a fix for someone else. |

Re: At wits end for a Limited or No Connectivity problem
Everytime you change a device (computer or router) directly connected to a modem (cable or DSL), you need to power off the modem for 30 seconds to release the locally connected devices MAC address otherwise only 1 device can connect to the Internet.
I would recommed a router for a long term solution. JamesO |

Re: At wits end for a Limited or No Connectivity problem
No connection is Safe Mode and I've already tried resetting the Modem, by powering it down for 30 seconds (with no effect). I think I'll try a router and see what happens, since it was previously connected to a router.

Re: At wits end for a Limited or No Connectivity problem
A router seems to have solved this problem. No more rattling my brain over this. Although, it would have been nice to know the specifics behind why this happens. But oh well, thanks anyways.

Re: At wits end for a Limited or No Connectivity problem
The "specifics" were you didn't have a router!

Re: At wits end for a Limited or No Connectivity problem
Sorry i'm new
sounds like your modem is assigned only 1 IP, most providers have IPs that change or (renew) on a set cycle - also will locking of a mac address hence the powercycle - however sometimes the IPs get stuck in the system and a power cycle isn't enough to released it - to correct this for good - simply call shaw and request a 2nd IP (free) more than 2 will cost, but you really only need the 2 so if 1 is stuck in the system you have a backup ![]() a powercycle won't fully resolve this type of issue "rare" but does happen, because the IP is stuck on the in a server not your modem. |
