Limited Or No Connection!!! Help!!
Hi, I'm having trouble with my DSL/LAN connection. I have a speedstream 5360 external modem. my icon in my system tray for the LAN is always at "limited or no connectivity". I need to know how to fix that because I believe my DSL connection is suffering because of it. For example: When I am installing off my MTS cd, the installation does some connectivity tests at the end, and it always fails about 3/4 of them. However, at that point I can just cancel the installation and still have the ability to go online, but I need to get this fixed and I have exhausted my knowledge, so its time for some help. PLEASE HELP!!

Re: Limited Or No Connection!!! Help!!
the speedstreams are bridged by default so if your computer is getting limited or no connectivity it is either the modem bad, your nic bad, bad ethernet cable, or windows might need a winsock reset
limited or no connectivity means you are not being assigned an ip address. if you check your ip address it will start with 169 and thats bad. -first you should power cycle everything -next you can do winsock fix on winxp sp2 by going to Start | Run | type cmd | in black command prompt type | netsh winsock reset | restart your computer. try another ethernet cable or another computer if possible. the last thing is talk to your isp and they can check to see if the Redback is not assigning an ip address because speedstreams are bridged. (you should be getting a direct ip from your isp) |

Re: Limited Or No Connection!!! Help!!
Actually, there are two stack reset commands for SP2.
TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2. For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt. Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Re: Limited Or No Connection!!! Help!!
Well my first solution to this would be to manually assign an IP address to the LAN connection adapter... first thing i ever do to fix these kind of things
We get calls like this everyday at tech support and this fixes em right away :) Just type in an IP address in the same IP range of the modem Yeah, i know i repeat this alot but it is very useful... if not go and make sure it IS on DHCP and by default i dont think the Speedstream is bridged...if it was the computer would get a private IP address and you would NOT have internet access since the computer is unable to decode it when it is on bridge mode...this is where a router comes in handy If this keeps on happening you might have to download a patch fr om Microsoft to fix the Limited or no connectivity bug on SP2 |

Re: Limited Or No Connection!!! Help!!
My network card does have dhcp enabled i am sure (if you read part of the ipconfig data i posted)
as for manually assigning an ip, im gonna need a little bit of a step-by-step. I am quite experienced with computers, but i am new to the networking stuff. im still learning my way around that. |

Re: Limited Or No Connection!!! Help!!
There's no reason on the planet that you need a manual IP address, and my guess is that it's not going to fix it anyway. Have you tried a new cable? It appears you have no physical connection to the Internet, that points to a cable, bad router, or bad NIC.

Re: Limited Or No Connection!!! Help!!
well I had the same cable and modem hooked up to a different computer, and I never got any "limited or no connection" errors. However i also did have problems with certain programs connecting. so then I guess it could be the cable, or the modem, or maybe even the NIC too. How can I narrow that down to the component/s that is failing (if any at all)? aside from trying a new cable?

Re: Limited Or No Connection!!! Help!!
Substitution is the way I narrow these issues down.

Re: Limited Or No Connection!!! Help!!
My suggestion is get a router and un-install IPv6 and the DSL providers software.
I really do not like having the PPPoE configured on a computer when you can have the router handle this piece of the puzzle. Makes problems easier to resolve IMHO. JamesO |

Re: Limited Or No Connection!!! Help!!
I have already uninstalled the DSL providers software, but what is an IPv6?
I have been thinking about setting up a wireless network. So what type of router should I get to do that? also is there any other equipment that I'll need besides wireless networking cards for all the computers? |

Re: Limited Or No Connection!!! Help!!
IPV6 is just a variation of the classic IPV4 (ex: 192.168.0.1) but you dont need to uninstall this protocol but most of the time its not necessary
As for the router, yes that would be a better option, uninstall all the PPPoE dialer software from your computer and the router should keep your connnection always on-line Now, the router thats your personal choice... I would recommend something along the lines of a Linksys, D-Link, Etc i dont have much experience with any other's but does anybody have any other experiences / preferrences in routers ? Well if you do want to work in a wireless environment you might need to get wireless cards for all of them if they arent already built in Or you can just get an ethernet cable and hardwire them in... |

Re: Limited Or No Connection!!! Help!!
If you have another computer with a nic i would hook the modem up to that computer see if your pulling an ip address. Have you talked to your isp yet? I work for a dsl company and this issue could be on their end. with the company i work for the modems have lifetime warranty.
But most times to tell you the truth it is the nic card that goes bad, if it isn't integrated with your motherboard try to pop it out of your motherboard and put it back in. Go buy a nic it must be the cheapest part of a computer and you can also buy adapters that plug into usb ports 15-30 bucks depending on name brand. |

Re: Limited Or No Connection!!! Help!!
I have tried the modem on other computers with the same result, so I know that the NIC is fine. What do I say to the ISP to describe the problem? or can I ask them to refresh something to fix the problem? i have a speedstream 5360 modem, are there any known problems regarding that modem that could cause this problem?
