Not sure I understand your question.

Most external modems respond to standard AT commands, which are usually DOS based. Internal WinModem try PCI cards may be a bit different?

Using HyperTerminal you should be able to communicate with most modems and determine if they are accepting AT commands.

More specifics would help.

I think you mean external modems that connect to the computer with serial cables. U.S. Robotics and BestData (probably others too) still make DOS compatible modems. With the exception of USB modems, I think virtually any external modem should still work in DOS.

There are a handful of internal modems that work with DOS, but as stated, any external modem will normally work with DOS.
