very Weird Issue - Verizon DSL

Alright, for the last month or so I have been having problems with my Verizon DSL. The main problem is, I can not download for crap. But, there is an interesting twist to this..

So far, the following methods were attempted by me that Verizon suggested:

* Restart Computer - Did not work
Restart Modem - Did not work
Turn modem off for 1 hour - Did not work
Get a longer ethernet cable, instead of phone cord, because ethernet cable is faster - Did not work
Remove all file sharing, spyware, viruses - Did not work
Replace filters - Speed test on speakeasy went from 40kbs down, to 200-1000 down. (Im supposed to be getting up to 3000 kbs download.

It turns out a filter was burnt out or something, but, my speeds are still very slow. My download tests come out okay, but once I get to the internet and actually try downloading anything, its only going at 15-30 kbs. That's worse than dial up! (I think lol)

Here is a small twist to the story. If I turn on any of the house phones, get a dial tone, my download speed will increase from about 24kbs to 100-250 kbs.

I don't know what to do. Ive tried everything, I've thought of everything i can do, and nothing works. Why would my phone being on effect the speed of my download if everything is filtered properly? I'm so confused, and could use some major help, because I'm sick of downloading at turtle-like speeds. Please help

Thanks in advance!!

Here are some pictures / screen shots I took to prove this issue.

Re: very Weird Issue - Verizon DSL

You have an internal wiring problem in the house somewhere that probably needs to be fixed and/or filters are missing from some equipment.

If you make a phone call and the download speeds increase, this is loading the phone line and probably reducing some 60 Hz hum or other noise.

I doubt your filter was burned out, but if you changed it, you may have moved some of the wiring around.

Some very specific things you need to look into further.

1. Scrap the whole microfilter issues, buy a decent DSL splitter, a device that actually has a specific filter for DSL inside, install this where you telephone wiring comes into the house. Connect your DSL modem directly to the DSL splitter with CAT3 or CAT5 cable and/or move your DSL modem to very close the DSL filter and run CAT5 to the computer.

2. Make absolutely sure all DSL filters are installed correctly. Note they are directional, so always make sure the RJ-11 plug on the DSL filter connects to where the dial tone is.

3. Many DSL users have satellite for TV service. I find that many of the problems are with the satellite receivers. They forget to put filters in for the satellite receivers and TiVo units. The DIrecTV units with the 3 prong power cords are the worst offenders. These units with the 3 prong grounded plug cause massive ground loops!

4. Answering machines, Caller ID units and FAX machines many times have filters left off.

5. I find most wiring problem are inside wall jacks. Many times problems are with the metal wall phone mounting plates.

Not sure why the phone company folks do not know the trick with running a speed test with the phone off and on hook. It is the easiest trouble shooting method I have found for DSL.

Re: very Weird Issue - Verizon DSL

My fix for DSL issues is to get rid of the filters and interior wiring for the DSL modem.

Purchase a DSL splitter and install it at the telco service entrance. Run a direct line from the DSL port on the splitter directly to the DSL modem. Connect all of the other phone instruments to the telephone output of the DSL splitter. All of the DSL analog side wiring should be CAT3 or better twisted pair from the telco service entrance to the DSL/ADSL modem. You can use one of the twisted pairs in CAT5 cable if you have that on hand.

This is as good as it gets for DSL installations, and will usually solve in-house wiring issues.ing issues.
