DSL light on my new modem wont go on

hay guys i just got a starter kit for broadband and when i run it the kit it says sync failed when i get half way through the steps and i think im supposed to recieve an email with my authrisation details but my outlook express is not running it says

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'mail.bigpond.com', Server: 'mail.bigpond.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

how do i fix it?

and it says the install CD could not detect my ADSL service
