Adding a wireless router to the uplink of a wired router
I just bought a wireless router so I can use my laptop in my house anywhere. I have an existing wired router and do not want to change anything. All I want to do is add in the wireless router to the set up.
Unfortunatley the instructions that came with the wireless router are for replacing my existing which I do not want to do. Below are the specs OS: Windows XP SP2 Wired Router Linksys 4 port model# BEFSR41 Wireless Router Linksys Wirelss G WRT54GS Is it possible to add the second router with out changing anything else? Thanks for your help -Chris |

Yep!
![]() Connecting two SOHO broadband routers together. Configure the IP address of the secondary router to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address. Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router. Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router. Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

ok, I did everything you said and I can connect to the router. I was able to connect to the internet through this router but I keep dropping connection. I have to unplug the power to the router to be able to connect again.
The connection usually drops after about 5 minutes. I still can see the wireless router at this point but it will not have a connection to the net. Any suggestions? -Chris |

If the laptop has an Intel wireless card, you may need to update the drivers.
Make sure the Linksys wireless router firmware is up to date. If you have 2.4 GHz phones they will cause interference, might be an issue. Microwave ovens cause problems also, this might cause issues? Try changing the wireless channel and see what happens as well? JamesO |

Re: Adding a wireless router to the uplink of a wired router
Hey everyone. so i am playing a game online and I have linksys BEFW11S4 v4 wireless router. When i connect my PC to that router it lets me be on the game for about 15 min and then I get disconnected. Everything else is still fine except the game. So I looked up how to port forward the game and such and it still didn't work so I tried connecting directly from the modem and the game worked fine.
So i figured it must be something with the router. So I bought another wireless router and it did the same thing and so finally I bought a wired router this time and it worked fine. The wired router is Netgear Fast Ethernet Switch Model FS605 v3. Well the thing is my roomates wants wireless and I can't just connect the wired router so I have been trying to connect the wired router to the modem with a regular cable and then tried connect a crossover cable from the wired router's LAN ports to one of the wireless router's LAN port (I also tried the WAN port) and that is what i had read online, but I still can't connect to the internet with the wireless laptops. I did disable the DHCP and I did give the secondary wireless router a different IP address but it still doesn't work or I mean I do get connected but I can't open up a browser. It gives me "can't find the website" MY IP address for my PC is different than the normal 192.168.x.x. mine is 75.85.96.xxx and so I tried that on the wireless linksys router but it still doesn't work. Any ideas? Last edited by Zandan84; 11-08-2008 at 02:39 AM. |
