Hello and help with DSL
Hello, I need help. My son's Dell Latitude died last week, and I purchased a used Dell Inspiration 2500 from a used computer store here in town that I was told was a great place. Well I got screwed it looks like, warranty not worth paper and ink it took to write it. Here is the problem he said that the computer was ready for the internet. The Latitude we had before was on wireless with a netopia 3D wireless lan card. We have bellsouth DSL with netopia router, all other computers are online. We brought the Inspiration home put in the bellsouth CD and the wizzard came up and said no intel pro adapters found. I called bellsouth tech support and they had me look i hardware and there is no network adapters installed on this computer. When we plug in the 3D card we do get a green light and we do get a flashing amber light but it will not connect to the internet. The guy we got it from said he was running the internet from usb port, is this possible?
the last time it shows being on the inernet is in Jan. this year. How can I get the computer on the internet? He gave use a backup of the programs on the computer but network adapters are not there. |

Hello Mopman. Welcome to TSF.
If you are using XP, the netopia utility is not used. Instead, use windows wireless zero config. Make sure that service is running: Start>run>services.msc scroll down to wireless zero in the right pane. right click on it, select properties. In the middle of the window, change it's startup type to automatic. Reboot everything: Remove the power cable from the modem and router, wait one minute. plug in modem. wait one minute, plug in router and reboot computer. You should see the wireless icon in the notification area by the clock. If that doesn't work, open a command window: start>run>type in cmd. At the prompt, type in getmac. you should get a list of network adapters that are seen by the system. Then type ipconfig /all and post those results. To copy and paste from a cmd window, after running ipconfig/all, right click in the window, click "select all". then right click in the window where you want the results, right click and select paste |

You can get internal Dell Intel wireless cards on ebay for around $25.
http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Intel-Pro-Wi...QQcmdZViewItem Some of the earlier laptops had slots for wireless cards and antennas, but no wireless card. There should be a door on the bottom of the laptop that will allow access to the mini PCI card and there should be 2 small antenna wires in the location. Black and brown or black and white. If the machine has a mini PCI slot and antenna wires, I would look at getting a internal card. JamesO |
