Are dsl modems apples & oranges?
Hey folks,
I've been using a Cisco 678 DSL modem for YEARS.....like possibly five? Its a tank, no matter how much crap Qwest pulls my Cisco always comes back kicking. Anyway, Qwest sent me a Actiontech GT701 for free. The thought being that 3.0 meg service is only 1.5 service due to the modem? FYI... I have a new phone line drop from the street & my DSL is on a separate wire w/ a whole house filter at the box outside. Hooked it up, I did not see aperformance difference except having trouble making remote desktop play nice with it? Is there any reason not to go back to the old Cisco & sell the Action Tech on ebay. You know, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Your thoughts? fmg |

If you need support from Quest, they'll probably insist on you using their supplied equipment. I'd put the Cisco in the closet until you have a problem. I have a couple of spare routers here.

Hey John, long time.....you have been very helpful to me in the poast!
Well....
The Cisco was provided to me by Qwest originally 4-5 years ago. They actually do still support it, well sort of? They don't like it because you have to use a management cable to change settings that to date I have never needed to change. My guess is the Actiontech might provide a bit more security & is easire than the Cisco to adjust. I'm just curious, I guess, if you would have an opinion on performance......would for any reason the new action provide me with better performance/speed? thanks, fmg |

Well, I have Verizon FiOS, and my old D-Link DI-614+ can't handle the 15mbit speed, but the ActionTec MI424WR that Verizon supplied has no problem with the speed. I'd use the newer router unless there's a specific reason not to.
