I have had Verizon DSL for over 2 years now and I have never had any problems with it. I've always had super fast Internet speeds and downloads. Everything was great until about 2 weeks ago. My Internet stopped working completely. I called Verizon support and they walked me through resetting my modem but they never gave me an exact answer on why this happened or how I should avoid creating this problem in the future. So the resetting thing worked for a day or two. Then my Internet connection started being weird again. It worked, just not at nearly the right speed. Dial up would be faster.
I downloaded some Verizon help thing that pops up when my Internet isn't working right and says "connection issue detected" and asks me if I want it to fix the problem. So I say yes and then it asks me if I am having a wireless issue, I say no and then it proceeds to do some ip refresh/renew thing. Once it does that my Internet will work really well for maybe a half hour at the most and goes right back to sucking. Also I've noticed that the Ethernet light on my modem has been constantly blinking green. It used to blink every now and then but now it's been blinking every second. I have Windows XP, Verizon DSL and a Westell 2200 modem using an ethernet cord. Please help. :) thank you. |

I'd start with a malware/virus scan, since the constant activity seems to indicate that may be your issue.

How about a HijackThis log? There are lots of threats that Norton won't detect...

I moved you over to security for our experts to have a look. I don't like to look of a couple of things, but I'm not a security expert, so I'm going to defer to the real experts.

OK, I'm not seeing much in the way of malware in this log. Let's have you can run an online scan, and see if Norton and HJT have missed anything.
Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell4me.com/myway O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file) Close HijackThis now. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan using Internet Explorer at http://www.kaspersky.com/service?chapter=161739400 Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also post a new HJT log.

The 2 problem files that it found were the same file that I believe is the file for my Verizon Internet Toolbar.

Additionally, I just ran the Panda Activescan and it came up with 24 spyware files and 1 potentially unwanted tool.
Do you think the easiest way to disinfect my computer would be to purchase it from Panda for 12.95 or is there a free way to do it? I don't mind paying if that is going to make sure I don't have any of this spyware on my computer. Also, do you think this is what was slowing my Internet connection down so much? And what would be the best way to prevent all this in the future? I had McAfee, then switched to Norton (though it's only the trial) and both of them didn't catch all this. Doubtful this is what is slowing down your connection. I don't care for either McAfee or Norton, but neither would protect against all tracking cookies. They are placed on a system every time you visit a website unless you use proactive means such as a cookie blocker, an alternative browser such as Firefox, which has better native cookie control than IE, or other layers of protection software. Runtime error suggests issues other than malware. You'll be better off in the hands of the networking or Windows XP folks. Until your issues are addressed, I'd hold off on adding any more applications to the system. To remove what Panda found: Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist: MyWay (or MyWay SA, MyWay Search Assistant) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Delete this folder: C:\Program Files\MyWaySA --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Clear your IE cookies. Start>Settings>Control Panel>Internet Options>General tab>under Temporary files, click on Delete Cookies. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Let me know if you have any troubles performing these steps.

OK, if you're still experiencing issues, it would appear you'll be best served in the Modems/Cable/DSL/Satellite forum from which you first came.
I'll move this back with a redirect.

Do you still have the symptoms described in the first message?
I'm curious about the constant blinking light, that seems odd. That's why I suspected malware in the first place, it appears something is running in the background sending and/or receiving data. I'd be considering something like www.ethereal.com to monitor the connection from the computer and see what kind of activity I see at this point.

It's definitely gotten much better recently but still sometimes my ethernet light will start blinking constantly and if I turn my modem off, wait a few seconds and turn it back on, it's fine. Originally when I tried turning my modem on and off it would only fix the problem for maybe 15 minutes but now it seems to fix the problem for an hour or two. But when the ethernet light starts blinking constantly, I can barely get one webpage to open.

Well, the blinking light may indicate you have an ISP issue. I think it may be time for a new modem, since resetting the modem fixes it for a time.
