Cable speed - up and way down
Hello,
My son is an avid online player, and using Bresnan, during certain night hours, from about 6:00pm to 9, his ping to certain servers crawls to 400+. If I do speed checks in the area of the servers, they also crawl. Downloads also crawl. During other hours, everything seems to move along well. The killer is that a friend just a mile away also using Bresnan, can ping just fine at any time; no delays are experienced. We have done all of the virus scans, spyware, called Bresnan and there are no packet losses, and the tech has checked out the cables. Anyone know what could be causing this? ml |

what cable provider does your friend have ?
cable is very strange in some ways as it shares the net. the more users that are online the slower it gets and the 6pm to 9pm times are the times where most ppl are home and get on the net.

Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply. He has the same cable company. It just seems so odd that he lives so close and doesn't experience the slowdown. My next theory is to blame the college. We live about 2 blocks away and I wonder if there is some internet class going on, or some video-based class instruction and they are hogging the bandwidth. Possible? Multiple spyware and virus scans are all neg too. ml |

could definatly be, cable networks are divided into branches and if thers more users on your branch then well the network slows down. i had the same deal with my friend. i had full speed and he had the same internet and lived about 7 minutes from me but had half of the speed i was getting at peak usage times.
if your area has it, see if you can get verizon FIOS. some of the metropolitan areas and bigger cities are getting it. its a dedicated line just for you so you dont have the peak time speed drop effect. also check and make sure that during the 6pm and 9 pm times there arent any windows updates or virus updates or scans running automatically.

I have talked to the cable company. Nothing has been found wrong, but I bet if I can get to the right guy or gal, they'll be able to figure it out. We are paying for "speeds up to" which does happen. We are going to try and ping trace the connection and see if there is a bottleneck.
Thanks for the link too. ml |

What does A-OK mean? Can you post a link to the test results?

That's pretty difficult to read, that's why I asked for a link, which is provided at DSLReports. Here's a recent one of mine, this is what I have in mind.

I'm at a loss, it looks fine. I'd try the test during the time you're having the issues with ping times, maybe there's something that will show up then.
