Riddle me this

My isp, Insightbb, upped the download speed to 10 megs from 4 megs. They also raised the upload to 1 meg. I was unable to get over 5 megs down, but usually got around 900 on the upload after the upgrade. The isp went to docsis 2. I thought my old modem probably was the hang up, so I bought and installed a Motorola 5120 modem which is docsis 2 compatible. I still can't get past the 5 meg d/l speed. I was on the phone with the isp and they can't figure out what's wrong. The only other thing in the equation is a Speedstream router. I've been told a router is hardly ever the problem in a case like this. Any ideas/suggestions?

I suppose the first question is " can your pC handle the speed?
how does this modem connect to the PC, Ethernet RJ45 or USB and if USB USB 1 or 2?
Somewhere there must be a bottleneck.
Could be cabling, could be collisions.

If you want to eliminate the router, simply connect a machine directly to the modem for a test. Don't forget to power cycle the modem whenever you change the attached device.

It's the router. I eliminated it, and get the increased speed. OK, who makes the best budget wired router?

Hard to say. I'd start by resetting your router to factory defaults, downloading the latest firmware, and seeing if you can salvage that one. I've been able to run 15mbits through several SOHO routers here, so most of them shouldn't be an issue.

Got a new Linksys router and it fixed the problem. Let the 10 megs roll.
