connecting to wireless internet with old laptop

hey there,
want to connect a fairly old laptop to university wireless internet, and was wondering where to start. was thinking of buying a usb wireless adaptor, but will this be enough to connect? what exactly do i need? im pretty sure the laptop has a modem in it, but im not sure if this is adequate.

A USB wireless adapter should do the trick, unless the campus network has some special requirements.

What version of Windows does the laptop run?

I've added wireles NIC cards to old laptops and have seen great results. If it has a PCMCIA slot I'd go with that instead.
