Wanting to go DSL

My computer was put together by a friend who has a computer store. I am not a gamer so it has a 1.7 ghz processor and is about 4 yrs old. A friend who hasn't seen my computer says I have to have some connection in the back for the modem. How can I tell (if that is true) and will I need some kind of special card. I and still on dial-up.

You will need a ethernet card/nic card. You may have a onboard nic.
Look in back of pc and check for a what looks like oversized phone
jack insert.

I went to control panel/system/hardware and found this:VIA PCI 10/100mb fast ethernet adapter. Is this what you were referring to? Thanks!

Cable is faster. If you download alot that would be the way to go.
If you just download occasionally, I would go with whatever is
cheaper. Which ever way you go, it is alot faster than dialup,,ugggh

The cable here in San Antonio is far superior to DSL. Our cable network is all fibre optic whereas the phone network still runs on coppers. DSl has far slower and has a tendency to disconnect you after you get going here. The cheap cable packages give just as much speed with more reliability.

Also, no contracts. :)

I can't get DSL here, I had Comcast cable, and now I have Verizon FiOS fiber to the house. Very fast...
