Freezing with loud noise

Ok so my friend has this problem were when he is on the internet it will freeze and start making a loud buzzing noise and he cant move the cursor. He says this happens only when he is online, He has re-formatted it and yet he continues to have this problem. Could anyone help with what could be causing this and how to fix it ( I'm guessing it's an internet problem )

Also if this is in the wrong section then could some1 move it :) i wasn't exactly sure where to post.

Can you tell us the make/model of the modem, any router, and the machine? Also, the version/patch level of Windows in use? Is this a wired or wireless connection?

He has a wired connect but I believe he uses a Netgear router. The version of windows is Windows XP Home Edition SP 2.

If he reformatted, and it's not a specific site, I'd be looking at hardware issues.

Re: Freezing with loud noise

Is the router or the computer buzzing? If the computer freezes I would think it would be the computer but I still need to ask.

Please download and run SpeedFan to check the temperatures of the computer's hardware. If anything is overheating, it may be causing the freeze. The NIC could be overheating or maybe even have a defect in the firmware causing the breakdown in communication causing the system halt.
