I posted this on November 1st, (See "Cable modem... What happened?" in this forum) but couldn't get back until the 4th with my readings. I am posting the readings again at the end of this.
Here's a good one... I had a major crash on my Win XP, did a format reinstall, lost some stuff I THOUGHT I had backed up, oh well.... I dragged my old Win 2K out and used it to download fixes, etc. When I was ready to put XP back on line, I shut down, unplugged the LAN connect from 2K and plugged it into XP. My security suite said I wasn't connected to the internet. I tried other browsers, got "page can't be found...." I then shut down, unplugged from XP and plugged back into 2K. That unit gave the same "NOT CONNECTED" ???? My young lady is in the next room using the web via the same cable modem and router, so the web is present. I tried going straight from the modem using the cable that sent to the router. Same deal on both units. I went as far as to move my XP desktop to her room and plugging in there, no change. I have tried all the tricks I know, like uninstalling and unplugging everything, modem, USB, printer, etc. rebooting, shut down and then plug it all back in and reinstalling all the "New Hardware" The LAN has yellow ???s in device manager. I went to my nearby computer store and bought a used LAN card, the diagnose says it iS "Working Properly", drivers installed, but no internet. Does anyone have a clue? I was blown out by the fact that I tried my XP, plugged back into the 2K, which was working when I unplugged, and THAT didn't work. I have tried new cables, different routes but no good. I'm stumped. I hope someone can find an answer. Here are the readings from BOTH machines: Windows XP IP Configuration Host Name........................: pr-music-box Primary Dns Suffix...............: PR-MUSIC-BOX Node Type........................: Unknown IP Routing Enabled...............: No WINS Proxy Enabled...............: No Dns Suffix Search List...........: PR-MUSIC-BOX Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix...: Belkin Descrpition......................: 3Com EtherLink XL 10/100 PCI For CompletePC Manegement NIC <3C905-TX Physical Address.................: 00-04-76-CF-08-FF Dhcp Enabled.....................: Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled........: Yes IP Adress........................: 192.168.2.99 Subnet Mask......................: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway..................: 192.168.2.1 DHCP Server......................: 192.168.2.1 DNS Servers......................: 192.168.2.1 Lease Obtained...................: Thursday, November 02, 2006 9:31:08 AM Lease Expires....................: Monday January 18, 2038 7:14:07 PM ------------------------------------------------------ Windows 2000 IP Configuration Host Name.............: PRM64 Primary DNS Suffix....: Mode Type.............: Broadcast IP Routing Enabled....: Yes WINS Proxy Enabled....: No ------------------------------------------------------ Can you clue me in to the "lease" mentioned? It starts on the day I installed my used LAN PCI card, I have another Lan out on my motherboard which doesn't seem to show. If I get one of them on lone, can i network the two, and use the connection to move files from the on-line to the off-line?

To begin, things look to be fine and the NIC you have is installed and connected. That is to say, a signal is present and the DHCP system of your router has assigned it an internal IP address. The lease that it mentions is the IP address that the router gives. The major DHCP controller down at the ISP works much the same. Since that expiration date is well into the future you needn't worry about it.

Try this on the XP machine:
TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2. For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt. Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Is there a way I can post a clipbook file (.clp) or a .gif, so you can see what is on my screen? I have tried the things you said to do with no success. The most success I had was getting "netsh" at my C: prompt. All further attempts yielded "Command not found....
I searched all my drives for "Winsock "(including system and hidden files) and found two small .dll filles. I ran a Winsock fix program, it always says it is fixed. When I get properties of 1394 net adapters and 3COM etherlink they both say "This device is working properly", but still no internet. I think The drivers didn't install when I reinstalled WinXP. I have tried to install everything while pointing it to my XP install disks, one after the other. No change. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Do NOT use the generic Winsock repair on XP-SP2, the registry entries have changed significantly. You need to use the reset procedure I posted for SP2 equipped machines.

I haven't been on line since my reinstall, so I only have XP SP1. I have tried to download drivers etc, but they all want to scan my machine to match the right software.... I am not on my machine.

I finally found the right drivers on my WXP install disks. I am back on line! Why don't they label the drivers? They were all numbered.... now I will have to go and weed out the drivers I installed that I don't need. Thanks for all the help.

It's my belief that the MS dev team remembers numbers (Often preceeded by the dollar sign) better than letters and words.
