Hi,

If a USRobotic modem, then make sure you have it in PCI #3 (third slot down from the graphics card). Also, DON'T let windows tell you the best driver is installed when it recognizes the modem. It is absolutely necessary that you go to the USRobotics website and download the latest drivers. Now hear this.....FORCE it to take the new drivers even if Windows says the best are loaded. Windows only loads v.90 drivers and they don't work well with these USRobotics v.92 modems. One other thing, it will tell you the drivers are not digitally signed....don't pay any attention to that, FORCE the load anyway and it should work for you.

Hi,

What is the exact model number of this modem? Is it 5699B or another model?

Hi,

First of all, is the modem in PCI #3. If not, you may be having port sharing problems.

Second, all the updates you need for that modem model including firmware and drivers is located here:

USRobotics Support: 5610b

Take a look and let us know how we can help you after you have downloaded and upgraded. Even though the modem is new, the drivers on those disks they send out are revised every time, so you should always download the newest and best from the manufacturers website.

Just remember, the Windows version you have will tell you the best drivers are installed....and they are not unless you have the latest. Windows installs v.90 drivers that are terrible.

Second, the digitally signed has more to do with a Royalty being paid or not paid to Microsoft than drivers that will harm your system or not work. Microsoft wants all hardware manufacturer's to pay a royalty to Microsoft to endorse their drivers and USRobotics has refused to do that.....however, they are safe and they work.

Let us know how things are going with this issue.

Google eastmtu and run it. Click on suggested and it will give you a set of values. Click on OK and reboot. That will help a little. If you run the program and you get an error message just click on ok and it still will run the program. If it worries you that it threw an error message i'm sure you can find something else on the net to help you set your MTU and TCP window, etc.

Hi,

After you have downloaded the drivers and unzipped them to a folder on your C: drive.....then, go to:

Start

Control Panel

System

Hardware

Device Manager

Go to Modems and click the little + to open that area.

Then, select Update drivers

It will ask if Windows can search for the drivers, select NO

Select, Install from a list or specific location (advanced)

Select, Next

Select Don't Search, I will choose the driver to install

Then, point it to the unzipped file and away you should go.

I did this from memory, so hope I didn't miss anything. Post back and let me know how it goes.

Hi,

First of all, so glad that the solution worked for you. Hope it continues to function the way you want it.

Not quite sure what you are asking unless you are asking about putting this item in the taskbar. If that is what you are asking, here is a link that will help you to understand the function and use of the task bar, including how to put icons there:

Win XP Tutorial Part 3 - An introduction to the Taskbar

If that is not what you want, please clarify if you simply want it on the desktop.

Hi,

For example, when my dial-up is on, I have this little icon on the task bar. If my mouse goes over there, it pops up and shows the speed of the connection and the sent and received bytes. That was the only thing that I could think that maybe you wanted. I also think (don't use USRobotics anymore) that the Master Control Panel of the USRobotics program has a feature similar to that, but not sure since it has been a while since I used on of these.

Anyhow, let me know if I can help further.

Hi,

Give this a shot:

Go to: My Computer

Select: My Network Places

Select: View Network Connections

Right Click on Connection that you are using

Select: Properties

Check: Select Icon in Notification Area When Connected

Click: OK

This should do it, but remember, usually you have to shut down and boot back up to get it to work.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi,

Glad to hear that both solutions worked for you. Don't be a stranger on the forum now, hang around and lend a hand if you see something you know about. Have a great week.
