Hello all.
I have a laptop running XP and I need to recover files off a freinds windows 98 laptop. It looks to me like the simplest networking solution is a USB cable connection between the two computers. Does anyone out there know if its possible to access a networked hard drive and do things like perform scans and other operations using a USB link? I saw a post by FOX who said : "The only way I can think of, save purchasing a USB adapting case, is to put the hard drive in another pc jumpered as slave, and network the drive to retrieve any files you need." I don't think FOX is talking about a USB network cable, but its the closest thing I could find. Thanks very much. ![]() |

fox was referring to external disk cases, that attach to the USB.
with one of these, you could take the data from the 98 machine and send it to the external disk, and then later, connect the external disk to the xp laptop and pull them back through. or, if both machines have networking cards, you can set up a LAN, and send the files through that. if both have modems, you could try setting up a direct dial thingie. (don't know much about it, i havent used a modem to dial to my friend's machine (other than for internet access) since the days of 9600 baud.) and although it is new technology, USB link cables do exist, but i dont know how well they work, so i can't offer any sort of support in using it. (other than helping to understand the instructions possibly) Here is a link to one: http://www.abcd.com.au/accessories/usb-link-cable.htm (to find it, i typed "USB networking cable" into google, with the quotes.)

USB external drives are very useful devices, they're compatible with most systems with any sort of USB port, and they're portable. :)
