Wireless Router Dropping Connnection
My Wireless Router keeps dropping my internet connection. The frequency does seem to occure in any decernable pattern, sometimes it will go all morning and afternoon without issue, but at night it just starts dropping and picking the connection every few minutes, which kills me when I'm gaming or downloading files. Here what I know.
It doesn't have to do with signal strength (one of my compters this happens to is connected directly to it via ethernet cable) It isn't a software or hardware problem with any of my Pc' (they all, mac's and pc's, worked fine with it several weeks ago, and now none do.) It isn't a problem with the ethernet cables (I've checked them all by running them directly from the cable modem to the computers) I don't know nearly as much about computers as most of the people on this forum seem to so if there are any suggestions please try to make them somewhat noob friendly. thanks in advance for your time. |

Make, model and firmware version of the router??
DSL or cable modem for the Internet service? Wireless client make and model? Are these mainly laptops with internal wireless cards? If the wired connection drops, then there is most likely and issue with the router. JamesO |

D-link Airplus Xtreme G wireless router.
The router came with the house I moved into so I'm not sure what the firmware is. How do I find out? The computers connected are: 3 powerbook mac G4's, one really old sony laptop running xp, and my homebuilt pc desktop running Me. It's difinately a problem with the router, as the connection drops on all the computer mac and pc's alike, and the connection works perfectly when you circumvent the wireless router. connection is road runner high speed cable. Open the routers web interface and check for the firmware version.
Usually D-Link web interface is 192.168.0.1, but check your default gateway address to be sure someone did not change it. It might be possible that this is an older router that does not have the horsepower to support a lot of wireless connections. Routers these days are under $50, so a replacement may be your best solution? JamesO |
