DSL modem
I have a Speedstream 5667 DSL modem, that can connect via USB or normal Ethernet Cable.
It was working just fine yesterday, I was trying to set up our router, (If you see the other topic i made, that's the type of router i have) and i guess i must of used a wrong cable (came with the modem) it was blue and looked just alike the other one (which did work) . Anyways, i connected that cable from the modem to the router and a bit after the DSL modem started working funny. I turn it on and all lights except the "Power Light" blink on and off non stop with cables connected or not. I dont know how to fix this. please help |

I moved your post to it's own thread.
Please always start your own thread when you have a question. Make sure you have the correct power plug in the router and modem. Lots of these have the same end on them and are easy to mix up. The blue cable you are talking about is a standard ethernet cable. Even if you used the wrong ethernet cable, it would not cause this problem, it just would not work.

Hey, thank you for moving this.
I have checked, and the only two cables that look alike are for the router and the modem, i have tried both.. although one of them does clearly say "Netgear" for the router, maybe i had the wrong one last night, i have tried the right one but the issue still remains. With the lights blinking i cant get any connection to go through. Any more ideas on what i can do to fix this issue? |

THank you for your help.
I was wondering, incase i cant get it fixed or just prefer buying a new one.. is there one you would recommend me getting? I have bellsouth DSL and a 802.11B CABLE/DSL WIRELES ROUTER MR814v1 NetGear Router and i was wondering what modem would be the best. Speedstream modem was the first modem i had bought and so i hardly knew any modems before then, this modem worked pretty good i thought until this recent issue. Thanks :) |

I have one last question about the actual modem failing.
About 3 weeks ago, our phone line got hit by lightning and the line was not working for a few days, the modem always has a phone line connected to it but that line goes to a walljack where the actual phone line from outside comes in and separates (one for phone, other for modem). My guess is, the modem might have somehow be affected by the lightning strike.. but continued working.. then i guess once i hooked up the router, it must of given the modem a boost of energy or something and messed up due to that and the lightning. Because like i said, the lights flash on and off non stop when i connect the modem to the power, and i have made sure tons of times that it is the right power cable. Could this be a right guess in what happened to the modem? I already have a new one coming my way, but i was hoping to see if this modem i had could be fixed later on to keep as a backup modem incase something happens in the future. Thanks (Edit - I just saw the Modem forum under the Networking section right after i posted this question, i dont know which place would know the answer to this question.. so i apologize if this is the wrong place.) We can help you here.
When lightning strikes something, it does not always fail right then. Sometimes it weakens the device and it fails later. This sounds like what you had happen. Look into a telephone line surge protector. This goes between you wall and the modem and may prevent this from happening again.
