modem firmware

my DSL modem from verizon transmits a wireless signal but sometimes that signal is blocked by interference and I can't take my laptop more than a few feet away from the router without losing the connection. I called tech support and they said I needed to download the routers firmware, how do I do that?

Can you tell us the model of the modem/router? I use D-Link products and they feature a web interface for configuration. Updating the browser is as simple as saving it to my PC and then using the web interface to update it within the router.
