Modem trouble

Don't know if it is just a bad modem or if I have some settings wrong. Modem will drop call, sometimes I reconnect and it drops call w/in about 10-15 seconds, then several times after that. If it is a bad modem, no problem-I can replace, but if I have something set up wrong, then replacing won't do any good. Help!

To address Tumbleweed and Terrister, think it is a USRobotics faxmodem. At least that is what my computer says. Although, when I took it out to clean it and make sure it was connected all the way, it had 3Com on it too.

Yes I have call waiting. Didn't have any trouble w/my old computer, so I left it hooked up.

Most phone companies have a code you can add to the isp's phone # to disable call waiting.
Did you try disconnecting all phones as dai suggested?
Who is your ISP?

Hi,

If this is a USRobotics modem, make sure you are not using the drivers from WinXP, or it just won't work properly. You need to download the latest drivers from their website, and FORCE them to load even though they will teel you the drivers are not digitally signed. It will also tell you that the best drivers (WinXP) are loaded for that modem, but make it load the new drivers anyhow.

The USRobotics modems will not operate properly with the v.90 drivers that WinXP has, so you have to make sure if you have a v.92 modem, that you have v.92 drivers. Give that a try and report back.

Note: Is this modem by the way a USRobotics 5699B model? Just curious, several of their modems have that same problem, but this model is notorious for that problem and is worse than most of them. However, if you get it set up correctly, it should be fine.

It is *70 to disable call waiting, and I have it disabled. My isp is a local one called Internet Club. Dial-up, not real fast, but fairly good. My other computer didn't drop calls like this one does, that is why I think it may that my modem is going bad. How can I tell, though?
