Voyager 205 - Ethernet problems
Hi ladies, gents,
After reading these forums and others it became apparent that I should be networking my router using Ethernet and not USB. My router works great at the moment (USB), however when I try to connect it via Ethernet it doesn't work. The error message I get is 'Error 769: The specified destination is not reachable'. Now I've tried to read up on it and have already done the following to no avail. 1. Made a new connection... Connect to the Internet > Set up my connection manually > Connected using broadband connection / Connect using a dial up modem. 2. Opened IE and typed in an IP address (it said page cannot be displayed). I can say with 99.9% confidence that the modem in not defective, I'm thinking that I'm just setting it up wrong, although I read somewhere else on this board that Ethernet connections do not require drivers and such so I'm assuming from that that it should set itself up.... Any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Last edited by M1ke; 08-11-2006 at 11:18 AM. |

Sure I'll be glad to. Thanks for asking.
Click (or double click as necessary) on the start button, then control panel, then system, then the hardware tab, then the device manager tab, then network adapter. That should tell you what kind of adapter you have. Double click on the adapter and a screen will come up that should tell you if it is working properly. If it is not then click on the driver tab at the top of the window, and click on the update driver and follow the instructions. If that does not solve your problem post back and I or someone else will provide you with more information. Last edited by A-Nick4me; 08-11-2006 at 01:12 PM. |

I did search for drivers but as I said I have ones for USB but was unsure whether I needed drivers for Ethernet, I also stumbled across this:
BT Voyager 205 router drivers I checked my network adapter it reports that everything is fine with the modem. As said, it works perfect if I connect the router using the USB cable, no joy whatsoever when connecting using the Ethernet cable, thanks though... Last edited by M1ke; 08-11-2006 at 01:53 PM. |

Thanks for posting back.
I have a router with an Ethernet connection to my machine. I need a driver to make my Ethernet card (or connection work). I did nothing to the router, or the modem other than hook it up. The router came preset from the supplier to work with the ISP that I have, and instructions for what to do if it did not. The router needs/needed no input from me in connection with any drivers. The modem came from (was purchased) from my ISP. (Which is the only condition that my ISP will agree to provide their service) It is not all that rare for windows update or the installation software disk to download an inferior driver. (I have personally had that happen) I had to find the website of the company that manufactured my Ethernet/adapter card. And download a driver for that particular card. And that was all there was to it. I suspect that anything beyond that may be an indication of a hardware problem. Last edited by A-Nick4me; 08-11-2006 at 02:48 PM. |

Thanks for also posting back.
I used this router on an older computer also connecting it using USB. However I got the router from BT and not with my pc. The drivers came with the original driver CD but only had USB drivers even though it came with an Ethernet cable (that's BT for you ). Again thanks for reading and mucking in, maybe someone has dealth with this issue and can narrow it down....

I used to have a voyager 205 router myself....but not for long, was a complete pain in the rear!! Though I managed to get a connection easily enough...was just things like port forwarding that never worked too well. As a basic router, it should be adequate.
Once all your cables are connected, go to your Control Panel and double click the Internet Options applet then click the Connections tab. Check 'Never dial a connection' and then click the 'LAN Settings' button. In there, place a check in 'Automatically detect settings' and then click OK then OK again. Now try your internet again please and post back on what happens....if no joy, post back on whether your router shows an active ADSL connection (solid green light). Hope that helps :-)

Hi nickster,
When I connect my Ethernet cable I get all lights solid green (power, DSL and Ethernet). I tried what you said but with no joy (now I actually think I've set up the connection wrong in the first place). I'm taking an uneducated guess that will maybe help you work it out, I'm getting no confirmation whatsoever from Windows that I'm now connected through Ethernet (that's why I thought it might have something to do with drivers). I really have read up on it till my eyes bled but I'm sure I'm missing something really simple in the setup (in my connections). When I connect using the USB cable the 'connection' I go on was set up through the USB drivers supplied by BT, that is where I think I'm going wrong. I hope that helps you a little, thankyou.... |

Hi Mike,
When you say you think it might be something real simple it reminded me that for my set up there was a certain procedure that I had to restrict myself to in regards to when the power was turned on. While I don't remember exactly what that was, I can tell you that when I set my unit up again after having moved. that I left the power turned off (to the modem, router, and computer) until after everything was hooked up. Might be helpful although I don't know if that applies to your situation? |

Remove the USB connection, and power down the modem and machine. Connect the Ethernet cable from the modem to the computer. turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect. Boot the comptuer, see if your connected. If not, do this:
For 98 or ME, Start, Run, COMMAND to open a DOS window: --- or --- For 2K or XP, Start, Run, CMD to open a DOS window: Type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here.

It doesn't show anything with the Ethernet connected?
I'd start suspecting either the NIC drivers or a defective NIC at this point. I presume that the Network Adapters in Device Manager doesn't show any errors for your wired NIC, right?

Is this nic an onboard or pci?
Which ever it is, I would advise that you go to your device manager and right click on your network card and select uninstall. Then reboot your computer and go through the install process. This may work, but if not login to the modem and be sure that dchp is enabled. If not, enable it then try it on ethernet again. |
