Diamond SM56E External Modem

I bought a new modem (as listed in the title) and I've been having some stability issues with XP Home. I've tried several different drivers for it, and the same thing keeps happening - BSoD with an error message "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL."

The IRQ range on the COM Port doesn't show any conflicts. I can query the modem without problems and use it for a while. But at random times, th e BSoD comes up. This only started happening when I installed the modem.

My System

Hi...

I found this:

Quote:
Diamond SupraMax External - (Serial) 56K Modem

This modem is working well with VoiceGuide for me so far. MSRP is US$59.99, but Fry's has it for $49.99.

Tibor, I would suggest a serial modem over a USB one based on what I've read here and my own experience. Most computers have two serial ports on the back, and they are seldom in use by other devices, so consider this as an alternative.

About the SM56E, the driver included on the CD caused WinXP to crash when I used VG (BSOD in acfva.sys, the ACF filter driver). I downloaded the driver from Diamond and got them to work, although I had to mess around a bit in the registry. I suspect that if you install the driver from the web first, and don't bother with the driver on the CD, you won't have to change anything in the registry, but I'm not sure.
here.

Hope it helps :)

I wonder if the acfva.sys file would have anything to do with the crash. What I don't understand is that the computer crashes at random intervals. Sometimes it crashes after a few minutes....sometimes it goes for hours at a time before giving the BSoD. Weird.

I've tried those drivers, several times. Nothing works. Most of the time, when I try to reinstall the drivers, it will get hung up on hfinstll.DLL (I can't remember the exact spelling off the top of my head). Could that DLL file be a problem?

Correction: hfinst.DLL is the file

In regards to the VoiceGuide forum post, I dug through the registry like that guy suggested, and it seems to be working ok so far *knock on wood* If anything changes, I'll be sure to post back.

it ran fine last night and this morning....got up to check email and BSoD again. *sigh*

I think there's some stability issues with XP Home and RS232 port modems. I've had problems like this from a Creative Labs Modem Blaster v.92 on another machine that was running Home. I tried it on a computer with XP Pro and it worked fine. Who knows.
