Question Bizarre Problem

A few weeks ago, just after a lightning storm, one bolt of which hit my next door neighbor's tree, my cable modem stopped working. I went to my ISP and got a new one. After replacing it, I could not connect through my wireless access point by either wireless OR cable. I figured that my router was also fried by the lightning so I got a new D-Link DI-624 to replace it. After plugging in the new modem I found that I STILL could not connect to it via cable! I tried using 2 different cables, both of which work when I connect directly through the cable modem, but the router lights indicating a cable connection would not light up for any of the 4 ports no matter which port I connected to.

Yesterday I thought I would try again. I connected my notebook PC to port #1 on the D-Link router and turned it on. The router light for port #1 came on! I was able to log in to the Net, but after about 10 or 15 minutes, the light went off and once again I had no connection. Today I tried it again, but nothing - no lights come on when I connect my PC.

How can it be that I can connect directly through the modem to the Net using the cable with no problem, but the router can hardly see my PC when I use it to connect? It does not seem to be the cable, since as I said, the same thing happens when I tried 2 different cables.

When I have to use my work notebook PC now to connect for work I have to disconnect my router so I have no wireless connectivity all day on my home PC, which sucks.

Any ideas anyone???

Did you call the cable company and give them the MAC address of the replacement modem?
