wireless card help

I have a friend who has a japanese student staying with her. She brought her brand new laptop over from japan and is having trouble connecting to here wireless 2 wire modem. I have tried to help and did not succeed. Any suggestions please?

Im not sure if this is the problem, but different countries use different channel numbers. Make sure the laptops network card is capable of using the same channel the router is on. If not, change the router to a channel both computers can use.
