Internet Disconecting, reconecting, disconecting...

Hello, I've been viewing the forums here for a bit and noticed that a lot of people have a similar problem with their internet connection disconnecting all the time.

My problem is that my internet will disconnect probally for 10secs, and then reconnect itself, long enough for a page to stop loading, or the most annoying, Msn to sign out.

I'm using a linksys B router, and yesterday I updated to the most recent Service pack of XP (And everything was working phenominal!) but today, its the same as always. I've even hardwired my own computer into the back of the mode via usb...however that doesn't seem to even work.

Everyone who is sharing the single here at my house also lose connection just as much, or maybe even less then I do.

I've been trying to figure this problem out for months! Anyone have any tips?

Well, since multiple people are losing connections, look for a common cause.

Start by telling us about the environment. Make/model of the modem, router, and any wireless client cards. Also, the version/patch level of Windows in use. Are you in a densely populated place, or more of a suburban setting?

Make/model = Linksys Wireless-B Broadband Router. Model No. BEFW11S4 ver. 4

No wireless cards, everyone in the house uses usb internet adaptors to connect to the router, everyone is using desktop computers too.

The Version of windows in use right now is Service Pack 2. I live in a surburban home too.

I hope this helps.

Well, I'd start by checking for any updated firmware for the router from D-Link. Next, I'd reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure for the ISP if it's DSL, cable should work with factory defaults. If that doesn't do it, I'd be looking at the modem to see when the disconnects happen if you lose the data link. If so, it points to the modem or the ISP connection. If not, it may indicate a bad router.

Have you tried connecting one computer directly to the modem to see if it runs reliably?

Hmm, I updated my firmware.

I reset the router to factory defaults and we are running on cable here.

The modem lights do not act abnormaliy when the conection is lost and the conection loses at random times, nto during something specific.

I'm thinking bad router now.

Download and install Alert Ping on your machine.

Configure your router (192.168.1.1??), cable modem (192.168.100.1 - if your current router passes this address), DNS address and some addresses outside your cable provider.

Also check your cable modem web interface for logs and signal levels. 192.168.100.1, assuming it is not a Toshiba (not all Toshiba's support this web interface) and if your router does not pass this address, you will need to directly connect to the modem. But power the modem on and off each time you change the connection.

Also note most modems will not support USB and Ethernet connections at the same time.

Change the default ping times to 1 second intervals.

This will show you where and when things are disconnecting.

I downloaded a program called omni net monitor which does the same thing as your program you sugested. And here's what I got:

No.# Status IP Address Description RTT(ms) Fails
1 128.103.60.24 Server - Web 5
2 18.7.22.69 Bridge - Bldg B 5
3 216.239.37.99 Gateway - Internet 5
4 152.3.233.20 Desktop - Lab 5
5 216.109.112.135 Switch - Bldg A 5

I have no idea where these IPs even came from, none look familiar.

And then when looking at the port section, one ip stays online all the time:

No.# Status Port IP Address Description Protocol Performance(ms) Fails
1 80 128.103.60.24 Web Program - NYC TCP 7
2 80 18.7.22.69 Web Program - Chi TCP 7
3 80 152.3.233.20 Web Program - LV TCP 7
4 80 216.109.112.135 Web Program - Phx TCP 7
5 80 169.229.131.109 Web Program - Stl TCP 3235

Number 5

Lets talk about basics.

Can you look at your cable modem web interface??

Make & model of cable modem?

What are the signal levels?
What is the SNR?
What does the cable modem log look like?
Who is your cable provider and where are you located?
