Accessing internal network from internet

This is my first post, so I hope that I do this right..

I have a "home" network that I would like to access from the internet.

I have DSL through a speedstream 5200. I plug the router into a port on my network, and it handles the NAT as long as I point the computers to it as a gateway.

I use Windows Server to handle my DHCP and DNS. This configuration works fine. All PC's are able to share the connection.

What I would like to do is host my website on my server and access it from the internet.

When I use the public IP, I do get directed to my Network, but what I am getting is the modems interface. I have attempted to port forward 80 to my internal server, but it does not work. I tried reasigning the public IP to the internal IP - Still get the modem interface.

The modem uses the internal IP of 192.168.254.1 with a gateway of 192.168.254.254. The external IP is not static, but is static enough that I can use a service such as DynDns to point my domain to the correct place.

I dabble in programming a little, and can get around my own LAN without issue. But when it comes to the internet, routing etc... I AM LOST!!

Any assistance is greatly appreciated!!

All you should have to do is forward the port to the local LAN IP address. I run an FTP server and do remote UltraVNC access to my systems, that's all I've ever done.

Forward Port

Thanks for the reply...

I actually have tried that... the modem will not accept the command.

I get the error "configuration error port or port(S) specified are reserved for system use (... maybe not an exact quote...)

I choose Service as HTTP and port as 80 and when I go to apply it... the above error...

I believe that I can put the modem in 'bridge' mode, and then I could plug that into my router which I can control .... would this be possible? or am I digging a canyon to bury a bone?

Once again thanks

"am I digging a canyon to bury a bone?"

Yep!

If port 80 is reserved, the modem must have something like remote administration enabled. Can you reserve other ports? If so, you need to figure out why port 80 is reserved.
