SB3100D & winxp

Ok this is my first post here, I have had the same Surfboard cable modem for the last 5 or 6 years, it was connected to mt older win 98 machine which I still have.
My problem is I cannot get the modem to connect with xp unless I wait for the 3rd light (send) to blink first and then it is only hit or miss I have to power uo the computer as soon as the send light comes on.
If I disconnect cable wire from xp unit and connect to win98 unit it works all the time.
If I don't get a proper connection when I hit explorer it will say "finding ______ and then I know I have to shut down the computer, unplug the moden and start again.
Ha sanyone else had this problem it seems to be an XP problem but not sure, there was a reg fix at microsoft but it has not helped.
Also can this modem be moded to be full broadband, It is now dialup for upload and high speed for download the cable company has full broadband now.

Are you connecting it directly to the XP machine? Did you power cycle the modem when changing the attached device?

According to this flyer, the modem will auto-detect the type of connection. http://broadband.motorola.com/catalo...nts/SB3100.pdf

If I use the win 98 machine I have no problems connecting at all.
The problem is with the XP machine a HP With Intel P4 3.06 GHz running Media Center Edition V2002.
I do not leave my modem on all the time since it is connected to my main home phone line.
When I wish to connect I have tried the following.
1. Turning on the modem and letting it power up prior to turning on the puter
2. Turning on the puter prior to turning on the modem
3. Turning on both at the same time via switch on poer strip
4. What I found works is to wait til the modem power light comes on, the recieve light comes on and when the "send" light starts to blink I turn on the puter.
For the LAN settings I use "use the following settings" because having it set on "obtain auto" does not get it done.
does this explain it any better?

I'm not sure what to tell you. I've never tinkered with those dial/cable modems. Have you checked with your ISP's support line? If they've upgraded to a full bi-directional system, when do you get to connect to that?

I don't know who told you that XP can't connect as well as any other version of Windows, but that's clearly incorrect. Please do this when you're connected with the XP machine:

For 98 or ME, Start, Run, COMMAND to open a DOS window:
--- or ---
For 2K or XP, Start, Run, CMD to open a DOS window:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

I have already done that and it made no differance, I was told there was a reg.fix available at microsoft which I used on dec 24 2005, but it did not help matters.
As I said before if I connect the cable from the modem to my win98 machine I have no problem.
It is only on the XP Media Center that I have a problem.
Could it have something to do with Media Center compared to regular XP home or XP Pro?

I normally use a floppy or USB disk to transfer the data.

I actually don't understand why you blank out the very information I need to know what's happening, but the display is useless without it. I already know what the IPCONFIG output looks like, I need the actual information.

There is no security risk in providing your IP address. FYI, mine is 68.80.219.148, and I don't feel any pain for having provided it.

I'd like to see the actual IPCONFIG from the W98 machine when it's connected also.

I do not understand why these numbers would be of any use in helping me, btw the win 98 machine comes up with the same as the xp machine.
giving up my IP addy would be a breach of security would it not?

Let me ask you a question? Do you know what those numbers all mean? If you do, are they all correct? Do they give any clues to what's wrong with your connection? Since you won't supply the information, I'm at a loss as to what I can do to help. Perhaps someone else will come along and attempt this in the blind, but I'm not so inclined.

If you get to the point that you feel you can provide the information requested, I'll be glad to take another look.

the numbers are all correct.
My problem is that when I connect as stated before I have to turn on the tower at the moment the 3rd light( Send) starts to blink if I turn on the tower prior to or after it has connected all the way I do not connect,
I can unplug the ethernet cable from the xp and plug into the 98 and the 98 willl connect as it should.
Again I was told back in december 2005 when I first got the xp machine that there was a problem with some xp units and that a reg. fix that Microsoft provided would solve the problem (it has not).
Again I stress THE ONLY WAY I CONNECT IS IF I START THE TOWER AT THE TIME OF THE 3RD LIGHT, ANY SLOWER OR PRIOR AND IT WILL NOT CONNECT.
