Internet troubles Please Help me

Greetings TSF!

This is my first post to the forum and I am in desperate need of your help and advice.

My trouble started 1 week ago today and it has been very difficult to figure out what is wrong with my computers, router and internet.

So last week I had two computers attached to a router and everything was working fine. Both computers are using XP Home edition. My wife and I were sharing a printer and shared folders were all working great.

Then one night my computer in the LAN section said limited or not connected.

I thought ok the router was acting wierd again so I unpluged the electric wire and pluged it back into the wall and restarted my computer. Usually this gets me back onto the internet again but this time it still said Limited or Not Connected.

I tried some troubleshooting things although I am not at all good at computers I just tried random things. I tried to connect my cable that goes to the router to wifes computer and she could get to the internet no problems.

So after my wifes computer could work on my cable for the router I thought it must be a trouble with my OS maybe. So I did a clean install of XP Home.
After I formatted and installed XP when it was time to register it again the LAN said Limited or No Connection.

I then thought perhaps it was my onboard Ethernet NIC so I went to the computer store and bought a PCI slot Ethernet Card and installed it. Again the LAN was saying the same thing.

So while I was doing all these troubleshooting things my wife was still connected to the internet via the router and then last Sunday her computer LAN said the same thing. I then thought perhaps the router is the trouble because it is old (4 years) and it was not doing the proper job anymore because how could both computers get the same trouble as her computer is quite new and still under warrenty and mine is about 4 years old.

So then I thought I would try to see if I make a new connection and connect to the internet without the router. That worked fine! Also when I made a new connection on my wifes computer that worked fine too!

I went to the computer store last Monday and bought a new router. When we plugged it in and attached our cables to it both of our LAN were ok again.

I was happy and thought the trouble was resolved. But it wasn't.

I sat down to program the router by using the 192.168.1.1 and it could not find it on explorer. I was confused because it had always worked on my old router and it was the same company as the old router too and instructed in the manual to also use that IP number.

So I came online via my direct connection to the Modem and researched and found that perhaps my modem and router both have the same IP and that is causing the trouble to connect to the config page of the router.

With the router unpluged from the modem I tried to connect to the router and it was possible! Again I was feeling close to success but that soon faded away again to the point where I am now.

I changed the LAN ip of the router to 192.168.1.20 and the DHCP from .21~60 for the computers to hook up. I set the PPPoe username and passwork and then plugged it into the modem. I then ran the Router test thing and it said it was connected to the internet successfully.

So when I turn on explorer or firefox it doesn't work. Just get the white "page not found screen".

If I ping websites it works through the router no packets lost. If I try internet explorer or firefox the green status bar moves like it would load the page but really really slowly and then finally goes to the white screen.

So thats about where I'm at now :( I could really use some advice. I hope you could help me sort this out.

If you have read all of this long post and can help I would greatly appreciate it.

Well, that was a huge and rambling post, and I still don't really know much about the actual configuration, or what your current problem is!

Make/model of the modem, and router. Version/patch level of Windows in use?

On one of the non-working machine, both connected directly to the modem, and then connected to the router, do this:

For 98 or ME, Start, Run, COMMAND to open a DOS window:
--- or ---
For 2K or XP, Start, Run, CMD to open a DOS window:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

That is on my machine that is not connected to the router at the moment.

The modem is from NTT communitcations (I'm in Japan) the model is MS-5
the modem is just new. The gave it to me today.

The router I bought is Corega Bar MX less than a week old.

I guess the main trouble is I can connect my computer to the router and then connect it to the modem. Set the ISP username and password into the router and it connects to the ISP. I can ping websites from my computer but I can not see any websites in any browser. Explorer or Firefox.

But when I connect from my computer to the modem it can connect to the internet and I can see websites in my browser.

I just did another clean install on this machine and did all the windows updates today. Also I format the HD with DBAN.

please help

I'm totally confused. Since you can ping by name on the Internet, it appears you have full Internet connectivity.

The wild card here is the router, when it's in the mix, something happens to your traffic. I'd suggest resetting the router to factory defaults and configuring it again. I've never heard of the Corega Bar MX, so I'm probably not going to be a lot of help in configuring it! What's the exact model of the router? This appears to be the page to find out something about it: http://www.corega-international.com/2/132/chprdkat.html
