SBC SpeedStream 5100, Netgear FS605 switch

I have a Speedstream 5100 dsl modem. A Netgear FS605 switch. Two PC's - 1 XP Pro & 1 Win 2000.

My problem is only 1 PC is able to connect to the internet. If I unplug 1 PC the other is able to connect. I am completely puzzled. Is it the switch or the modem? Any help will be appreciated.

Most ISPs will only give you one ip address per modem. Some will "give" you more than one if you pay more.
The best way to solve this is to replace the switch with a broadband router.

Switch was a waste?

Netgear says it will allow multiple pc's to access the internet at same time at full speed. Is that correct?

I'd hate to have to go out and buy a router if I don't have to. Anyway to make it work?

depends on your isp. Some will give you multiple ips. Others do not. Sounds like yours does not. 1st contact your ISP. See if they will let you have more than 1 IP address. If not, you need a router.

Yep, Netgear is just telling you the raw capability of the switch, but that's dependent on being able to connect multiple machines to your ISP, and I suspect that's the sticking point.

Netgear switch

The tech guys at Staples told me this would set me up so I don't have to buy a router. I use SBC dsl, I doubt they will be so kind and give me another ip address. Stupid me, bit that one hook, line and sinker.

That's the risk of getting technical advice from a $6/hr clerk!
