Ftp Site
I'm not very computer literate, somebody please HELP!!!
trying to set up my ftp site on my pc. I'm using win xp pro and bulletproof i'm also using a d-link router. I've racked my brains over this, and I believe that I've set this up correctly, I can't access my site. I think it has somthing to do with the firewall settings, but I can't figure this out. Thx EG |

Since you have a router, you need to port forward the FTP port (port 21) in the router's virtual server configuration to the machine with the FTP server running. You'll also have to allow port 21 through any software firewalls you have installed.

Hi Johnwill,
Thanks for your help. Would you be able to tell me the proper settings for the windows firewall? When I turn off the firewall I still can't access the site. I'm using my laptop to access the site which is set up on my desktop. So I can view the response when I try to access the site. It keeps telling me that access is denied that password is incorrect. I then reset the user and the password and it still won't allow access. I tried setting the software to allow anybody into the site with no password it still won't work. ANY ideas??? PLEASE HELP!! |

Does it work when you try accessing files through FTP on the server itself? First try the internal IP address- the one that's shown in ipconfig, and then try your external ip address (http://whatismyip.com). If the internal works but not the external, then you haven't configured port forwarding correctly. If they both give you errors, then you haven't configured the server properly.

It sounds like something is configured wrong locally. You shouldn't have any firewall issues working on your local LAN if you've disabled the Windows firewall.. I don't know that FTP server, hopefully someone that uses it will happen by.

try sFTP instead
i know you have already gone through the trouble of downloading, installing, and learning bulletproof, but I have had a lot of luck with openSSH as an sFTP server and winscp as a client. The read-me files are very informative. Both are open source and work very smoothly. The problem is, if others are going to use it, they must install a secure shell (SSH) or secure FTP (sFTP) client. Good Luck.
