Need some file sharing help please
Ok, I hope I explain myself right. Here goes:
I have a HP desktop that is connected to a wireless lynksys router via an ethernet cable(desktop does not have a wireless card). I also use a Toshiba laptop that does have a belkin wireless card. Both work just fine. What I want to be able to do is access my desktop files from my laptop. The thing is, I have 2 roommates that also have wireless laptops. And since we all share the wireless router, I want to make sure to NOT give them access to my desktop. Is there a way to do this?? I should also point out that one of the roommates configured the current network we all use, so not sure I could make changes to it. But there should be a way to find my desktop on the network and allow access from only my wireless laptop isn't there? Or do I just have to go with a USB type hookup?? Hope I explained myself correctly. And thanks for any and all help. Rock |

If the desktop is XP-Pro, you can turn off simple sharing, then make sure your account name/password is unknown to the other roommates. Where is your desktop machine, if they have physical access to it, there's little you can do about them getting your files. You can use EFS (encryption), but you need to make sure you understand the ramifications of EFS before you use it, or all your data could be inaccessible if you have a problem.
