Problem with file sharing on wireless network
I had a wireless network set up between my desktop and laptop that worked great until my desktop had a meltdown. After restoring the desktop, my laptop cannot access files on the desktop. My laptop can still access the internet via my home network, but it just can’t access files. The message I get when trying to access files is as follows:
\\Dell8250\c is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Not enough server storage is available to process this command. I’ve talked with Dell for hours and we’ve tried everything they can think of (checking permissions, making sure files are shared, etc.), but with no success. PC World mentioned that those on this site may have answers. Any ideas? Jeff |

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.
PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version. All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing. If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Neighborhood, make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login. While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing.

Reply - I tried everything down to the last 2 paragraphs. I'm not sure what account you are referring to. Both PCs are on the same network. I also haven't disabled my firewall yet. I was able to ping the computers successfully. I counldn't get the TCP/IP over netbios enabled.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.
For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt. Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log
