Re: Vista & XP File/Printer Sharing

I'm probably too thick to find how to make a new thread! Anyway this thread is the nearest I can find that is near my problem.

I have a 3 computer network, 2 running Vista and the other XP. All three can see each other and the 2 Vistas can access the XP Drive/files but only the Public files can be accessed on the Vistas from any of the computers! I have shared all drives and folders and tried disabling the firewall on both the Vistas but to no avail.

Help please!

Re: Vista & XP File/Printer Sharing

Even though it appears you're having the same problem, please start a new thread when you have a new issue. It's very difficult to keep two problems straight and who's working on what in a single thread.

I've created a new thread for your issue here.

Note: You will need to post complete details of your configuration and your specific issue in this new thread for us to help you.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Re: Vista & XP File/Printer Sharing

Thanks for the direction Johnwill, I really couldn't see how to start a new thread, (and still can't see it!), so thanks for starting it for me.

Ok, down to the problem.
As you see I have shown the problem. The network is WiFi. a printer is connected to one of the Vista machines and prints OK from all 3 computers. What other information do you need to help solve the problem?
I've checked that all three have the same network name, MSHOME.

Re: Vista & XP File/Printer Sharing

This is likely a permissions error, or possibly Vista network settings.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Places (Network and Sharing Center in Vista), make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login. NOTE: Vista's default is to require a password on the account to enable file/print sharing.

Make sure the folder permissions on the Vista machine allow Everybody access to the folders in question.

Re: Vista & XP File/Printer Sharing

Thanks for that Johnwill. I'm unsure how to look at/set the name/password for each Vista. Can you help please?

Re: Vista & XP File/Printer Sharing

Control Panel, User Accounts, you can change the password there.

For automatic login to bypass the password prompt you can run: control userpasswords2

This will allow you to boot to the desktop without typing the password. It works on XP, Vista, and Win7.
