External HDD and print services
Hi,
I did a quick search and didn't find anything, but feel free to flame me if I missed a post with this answer. I haven't found anything too helpful from google either. I have two printers and an external harddrive. The harddrive and one printer are USB, the other printer is USB and TCP/IP. I have one wireless AP on the first floor, my office is on the second floor. What I want to do is connect the printers and external drive over wireless, but I don't want to build out a desktop server (looking for something quiet and low power). I've been looking at wireless print server devices, and that will solve the printer problem, but I really want an all-in-one. I want one device I can hook up to both printers (or at least one of them) and also access my external HDD. I don't care about bad transfer rates over wireless, it's all small files anyway. I also can't move the AP upstairs since I rent and there's no connection (and I can't run a new one without running a ton of cable that I can't hide). The external drive is a WD Passport (Essential edition? Not a World Edition anyway) and I was hoping I could just turn it into a server running Samba and CUPS, but I don't think I can just dump linux on this version of the Passport. So far, I haven't found any wireless + USB NAS + print devices, but I could always be missing something. Can anyone suggest some possible solutions? Does anything exist that will work in my scenario? Thanks in advance! |
