[SOLVED] Drive mapping via the internet

Hi everyone.

I was wondering if it is possible to map a network drive that belongs to a remote LAN network, through the internet.

I've got 2 different LAN networks, and I need to enable file sharing between a PC from one network to a PC on the other network. I'm not interested in remote desktop connections, cause I need to run an automated process, copying files from one drive to the other. I also cannot set up a VPN.
An ftp is already set up, and can be used, if that's any help.
I don't know if what I'm asking can actually be done, but I'd like some opinions on it.

thanx for your answers.

Re: Drive mapping via the internet

WARNING! The following advice will open poorly secured ports to the world. And this protocol broadcasts host information onto the network. Proceed with caution!

Sure, BUT most home routers block TCP ports 137 to 139. So you would have to port forward those ports to the server computer. And you may have to also setup that same port range as permitted TCP ports. Then all you should have to do to connect is to \\ip-address\sharename

If you will always need to connect from the same remote location, look at your advanced firewall rules for setting up restrictions on what range of IP addresses are allowed to connect on those ports.

Re: Drive mapping via the internet

The safest way would be to set up a VPN between the 2 locations and then just add the mapping in the remote PC.

I wouldn't try to do it openly on the internet.

Good luck!

Problem solved using Hamachi.
It's been running smoothly for a couple of weeks now, and it looks great.

Thanks everyone for reading and posting on this
