XP File Sharing Fails
We run 4 XP machines and one Vista machine on our LAN connected through a Netgear wireless router. One of the XP machines, a new Panasonic Toughbook, shared files for a month then abruptly stopped sharing. Other facts:
- Toughbook still appears in the workgroup when viewed from another machine, however it does not share files. - When the workgroup is opened on the Toughbook, it shows no other machines. - The Toughbook sees the internet - Pinging the Toughbook fails from any machine, and it cannot ping other machines on the LAN. - Windows Firewall is disabled - Antivirus software removed, using windows add/remove programs - File and printer sharing enabled - Workgroup name = WORKGROUP Please help! PS. Johnwill I see you're interested in flying, live near DYL by any chance? |

Re: XP File Sharing Fails
Doylestown? I'm not really that far from it.
![]() Have you connected with a wired connection, booted in Safe Mode with Networking, and seen if you can ping both ways that way? When booting in normal mode, please post this for that machine. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key: Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands. NBTSTAT -n IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Yes, Doylestown. Free ride in a Yak-52 for a solution to this one...

Re: XP File Sharing Fails
The problem is the node type. I suspect if we fix that, you'll be networking.
![]() Create a file in notepad named NODETYPE.REG with the following contents: You should have 3 boxes on the bottom in NOTEPAD. 1)Filename : NODETYPE.REG 2)Save as type: all files 3)Encoding: ANSI If you do not change it from txt type to All files type, then the file will actually be NODETYPE.REG.txt, this won't accomplish the desired result. ------------------- Use text after this line ------------------- Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters] "NodeType"=- "DhcpNodeType"=- ------------------- Use text before this line ----------------- Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question. Reboot the computer.

Re: XP File Sharing Fails
Thanks for your help. We were able to resolve this problem by going back to an earlier restore point. If it happens again we will take a look at the node type and make changes as recommended.
