I have set up file sharing between my laptop (running Vista) and my PC (running WinXP), I did this quite some time ago and it worked fine for a long time. A few days ago I received the attached message when trying to access the file on my XP machine from my Vista laptop - first attachment.
The real strange thing is I get the same message (also attached) when trying to access the same folder on my xp machine using the "entire network" on explorer. These files are locate on the XP machine so I dont see how it can be a comunication issue between the two machines if I am receiving an error on my XP machine as well...hope this makes sense. This has me REALLy confused an any help will be very much appreciated. Cheers. |

Re: File sharing between WinXP and Vista
To recap, can you ping the Vista machine's IP address from the ? Can you Ping the XP machine from the Vista machine? Do you have File sharing on in XP (Windows Explorer/Tools/folder Options/View/Advnaced Settings scroll to the bottom, make sure "Use Simple File Sharing" is checked. Restart both computers. Ping each machine again. Once you can ping the machines you should be able to browse them.

Re: File sharing between WinXP and Vista
Thanks for replying spike2me. I haven't bothered to ping them as I assumed that they can communicate as they are able to see each other, just can't download file from within the shared folder.
I'm also confused as to the error message saying "not enough server storage space is available...", never seen (or heard of) this one before. I should also clarify that the attached message "error on XP machine" is actually from the XP machine, not the laptop. This makes me suspect that what ever the "storage space" message means, refers to a problem on the XP machine, not a communication issue between the two. Clear as mud.

Re: File sharing between WinXP and Vista
- Start, Run, REGEDIT
- Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters - Edit the IRPStackSize - Set it to a DWORD value of 15 (or more, valid range 11-50) - NOTE: If IRPStackSize doesn't exist, create a new DWORD entry for it - Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management - Set the PagedPoolSize to 0 - Exit REGEDIT and reboot

Fix for not enough storage error.
- Start, Run, REGEDIT - Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters - Edit the IRPStackSize - Set it to a DWORD value of 15 (or more, valid range 11-50) - NOTE: If IRPStackSize doesn't exist, create a new DWORD entry for it - Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management - Set the PagedPoolSize to 0 - Exit REGEDIT and reboot

Re: File sharing between WinXP and Vista
I did some digging on Google last night and found the same thing as mentioned above. However, I did what you suggested above and it still didn't work. I performed a "system restore" to a much earlier point and that did the trick.
![]() Thanks for your help, it appears that there was a registry problem, all sorted now. |
