Help configuring File & Printer Sharing Network between XP Pro & Vista

Hi,

Please assist me in configuring File & Printer sharing network between my Desktop (XP Pro) & Laptop (Vista Home Premium 32bit); connected to internet through WiFi ADSL2+Modem.

Done the intial setup. Named my desktop as ' OfficeDesktop' & my latop as ' SonyVaio'. Now I am able to view my laptop in my desktop network & vice-e-versa.

The issues am facing is:
1) In OfficeDesktop (XP Pro);
I am able to access only the PUBLIC folder but others are coming 'Access Denied'.

2) In SonyVaio (Vista Home Premium);
I can view OfficeDesktop, but is not accessible.
Message: "Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer."

Pls assist.

Re: Help configuring File & Printer Sharing Network between XP Pro & Vista

Thanks Johnwill, for your reply. Had referred to the article earlier as suggested.
  • Will this help - Disabling the DHCP BROADCAST flag in Windows Vista?
    If yes, then pls assist as am not able to follow the given resolution after step 2.
    Wot do I need to do after coming to Interfaces;
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\ Interfaces\{GUID}
    Quote:
    In this registry path, click the (GUID) subkey that corresponds to the network adapter that is connected to the network.
  • If there's more to be done, Pls assist further.

Re: Help configuring File & Printer Sharing Network between XP Pro & Vista

Changes that may help to increase the compatibility of Vista with older networking devices:

Disable the IP Helper service:

1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "services.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2. Scroll down to the IP Helper service, right click on it and select Properties
3. In the dropdown box that says "Automatic" or "Manual", set it to Disabled and then click on "Apply"
4. Then click on "Stop" to stop the service from running in the current session
5. Click OK to exit the dialog

Disable IPv6:

1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "ncpa.cpl" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2. Right click on each network connection and select "Properties"
3. Remove the checkmark from the box next to "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
4. Click OK to exit the dialog

NOTE: You should do this for each network connection.

Disable the DHCP Broadcast Flag:

Link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928233
  1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter regedit and press Enter.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
  3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{GUID}
  4. In this registry path, click the (GUID) subkey to be updated.
  5. If the key DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag does not exist, use the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value. In the New Value #1 box, type DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag, and then press ENTER. If the key exists, skip this step.
  6. Right-click DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag, and then click Modify.
  7. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
  8. Close Registry Editor.
NOTE: You should do this for each and every GUID subkey.
NOTE2: (GUID) is a mnemonic for the individual subkeys, the actual text "GUID" does not appaer.

The only program I'm aware of that currently relies on IPv6 is the new Windows Meeting Space. The first 2 changes will cause that program not to work - but will leave all of your normal (IPv4) connections unaffected. If it causes problems that you can't overcome, simply revert back to the original settings.

Re: Help configuring File & Printer Sharing Network between XP Pro & Vista

Thanks for your reply. Will do these & get back.

In the meanwhile for your info, I tried doing the following but no positive results;
1) Installed Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder on my XP Desktop.
2) Installed Internet Protocol Version 6 on XP Desktop.
3) Tried to Disable the DHCP Broadcast Flag in one GUID under Interfaces in my HP Laptop (Vista).

Re: Disable the DHCP Broadcast Flag
In my Sony Vaio (Vista), I have 4 GUID under Interfaces
In my HP (Vista), I have 6 GUID under Interfaces

Do I need to it in all the enteries?

Re: Help configuring File & Printer Sharing Network between XP Pro & Vista

Thanks Johnwill, will do the needful & get back.
BTW, will installing Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools on my XP machines help?

From one of your solutions:

Quote:
Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer

If you see this message the following should be done on the computer containing the shared files:

Download the following and install it

Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=4544

after installation is complete, click on: Start, All Programs, Windows Resource Kit Tools, Command Shell

Then enter the following commands. (Attention: they are case sensitive.)

net user guest /active:yes
ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -u Guest
ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest

The first command enables network access for Guest, the two subsequent ones change two different policies to allow network access for Guest.

Re: Help configuring File & Printer Sharing Network between XP Pro & Vista

That can't hurt, and since you're trying to share on the XP computer, that may be the ticket. For some reason, I was reading that you where having the server issue on the Vista side.

Thumbs Up

Bingo!!!
Finally was able to move ahead with all your assistance. Thanks a ton.

FYI:
1) Only Installed Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools on XP Desktop.
Entered the following commands in the command shell.

Quote:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools>net user guest /active:yes
The command completed successfully.

C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools>ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -u
Guest
Granting SeNetworkLogonRight to Guest ... successful

C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools>ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight
-u Guest
Revoking SeDenyNetworkLogonRight from Guest ... successful

C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools>
2) Have not done the following; Should I still execute them?
  • Disable the IP Helper service
  • Disable IPv6
  • Disable the DHCP Broadcast Flag:

3) But still on clicking shared 'My Documents' folder I am getting the following Network Error;
Quote:
Windows cannot access \\OFFICEDESKTOP\My Documents

Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose.
4) Now what else I need to take care of for sharing the Printer?
The printer is wired attached to the desktop & has been also installed on my laptop.

Will report of any other errors.

You can't share My Documents unless you change the permissions. Did you try turning off Password Protected Sharing on the Vista machine?

Re: Help configuring File & Printer Sharing Network between XP Pro & Vista

1) Permissions as in Simple to Advance Sharing?

2) Yes, the password protected sharing is switched off on Vista.

3) I just noticed; in my Laptop (Vista), under Network & Sharing Center:
Access = Local & Internet
Connection = Network Bridge

Network Bridge - Why so?

4) Have not done the following; Should I still execute them? Pls Reply.
  • Disable the IP Helper service
  • Disable IPv6
  • Disable the DHCP Broadcast Flag

5) How can I make my PC's in the File Sharing Network secure?
By using WEP Encryption in the Router will take care of the security?
