Creating an FTP Help Please

Hi everyone!

I need some help with an initial question I have. I am an IT Manager for a very small photo processing business and we are in dire need of an FTP so that customers can upload their images for us to download and print.

We've been advised by our IT consultant that we can have a HOSTED Ftp but the cost would be about £100 p/m which is beyond our budgets.

What I'd like to know is if I were to purchase a NAS Drive and connect it to our LAN could I set up My Own FTP Site which I would effectively HOST myself?

I'm assuming it's probably not THAT EASY otherwise everyone would be doing it themselves but I was sure I saw a Tutorial somewhere that showed how to create an FTP on a PC running XP Pro?

Anyway, a little guidance would be greatly appreciated so I know if I am heading down the right road or a Dead End.

Cheers and thanks for your help and support!

Actually, it's pretty easy to setup a decent FTP site, I'd use something like FileZilla. It'll run on any Windows version.

Re: Creating an FTP Help Please

Hi!
Thanks for your reply. I have CuteFTP installed at work already. Could that be used? I can look at the HELP Pages for setting up but is the principle sound? If I connect a NAS Drive to a LAN I could create my own FTP? One thing though, as there would potentially be multiple customer's requiring use of the FTP, and I would need to protect their privacy, I would like to be able to set up multilple Usernames/Passwords so that they can only view their folders and not anyone elses.

Does anyone know of a good place to start (website, etc.) that I could visit to get Step By Step instructions on how this could be setup?

Cheers

CuteFTP has a server component, but most folks just have the client. FileZilla is both a server and a client.

Okay cool! I'm familiar with Filezilla. BUT.... would the person doing the Uploading of the images have to use Filezilla as well? or could they use any FTP Client software?

No, Filezilla is a standard FTP server, any FTP client will talk to it.

Re: Creating an FTP Help Please

Yes, filezilla is realllllly easy to setup. Anyone with an ftp client program will be able to connect to it as long as you have accounts setup for them to login with. If you need any help feel free to post again, I have a lot of experience with filezilla, I can even give you a login to my home filezilla ftp server to test out if you'd like.
